Thanks, Rouk'!

Just realized that JJK 16 and One Piece 99 both released this week! I can't remember a time that One Piece failed to debut at #1. In fact, I'm pretty sure every One Piece volume has debuted at #1 since Oricon began tracking sales in 2008. But this is going to be close.

Most recent volumes first weeks:
1,237,929 [4 days] - One Piece #98
1,138,798 [4 days] - Jujutsu Kaisen #15

Well, ever since oricon started there have only been 3 series that would've actually been able to compete with OP on a per volume basis in any given year - KnY, JJK and NANA (back in 2008, before the strong world blowout that ended up basically doubling OP's sales).

NANA didn't quite outsell it, but was only very slightly behind, so it could've possibly beaten it if it had a head start of releasing a day or 2 before it within the week timeframe. But the release schedule made that pretty unlikely unless either one of the two had some odd release date. KnY would've certainly beaten it with any volume from 19 onwards (obliterating it with some of the latest releases), but we never got a same week release for the two.

Which will make JJK the first one to have the chance to knock it to #2 in a release week, and it should certainly happen. OP has an advantage of having a big day 0 (as it always tops the chart a day before release, whereas day 0 for KnY/JJK tends to be really low), but it probably will not make enough of a difference. The gap will probably not be too big, though.

According to shoseki ranking, top 5 is :
1. Jujutsu Kaisen vol. 16
2. One Piece vol. 99
3. SPYxFAMILY vol. 7
4. Monster #8 vol. 3
And as 5th Dr Stone vol. 21.

I don't think there's a huge difference too and actually JjK should logically be 1st if we look at how last volumes performed.

It took almost 100 volumes to bring OP down to #2 :P

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021 (May 24-30)
I'd still wait until Thursday (or maybe tomorrow if the weekly sales by series for the week has JJK well above One Piece) just to be certain. Earlier this year, Shoseki's rankings had the second Demon Slayer fanbook topping One Piece #98 each day in their first week, but One Piece #98 ended up having a higher first week.

But it is pretty likely that JJK #16 did beat One Piece #99 though if we assume that: A.) One Piece came in around its last volume (the volumes have had consistent first weeks for a couple years now) and B.) JJK enjoyed an increase of some sort (post-anime fans jumping on board, #16 concluding the insane Shibuya arc, and all the individual volume sales being above 2 million now).

As JustLurking mentioned above, there were opportunities in the past for Demon Slayer to block One Piece from debuting at #1, but they were never released in the same month. Still, the latest JJK beating the latest One Piece in a head-to-head first week (assuming it did), the first time anything ever has since records began, is going to make a lot of headlines in the anime/manga news outlets.

And this shouldn't be seen as a sign of "weakness" for One Piece either, but I suspect many will spew nonsense about it losing. The fact that it can still move over 1 million copies in 3/4 days after 99 volumes (assuming it did) and after almost 25 years in publication is unprecedented and absurd. Its recent first week sales are still comparable to those from just before/right after the Strong World/Marineford arc sales exposition the series began back in 2009/2010. All this entails is that the manga industry is very strong right now (even historically so), and is in a very healthy state with another newer series capable of matching the sales of a classic. It's a win-win for everyone, yet fans often make it "personal" and create a ton of toxicity by pitting their favorites against one another.

Indeed unfortunately the toxic nature of online fans cannot get beyond their own prejudice.

Do you see any other manga franchise surpassing DS in sales besides JJK this year?

Not really. Unless Tokyo Revengers sees a huge spike in sales starting June end and I mean 2m copies each week which just seems impossible at this point.

Tokyo Revengers has the live action movie hitting theaters in about a month which could assist the anime and help blow up the series further. Not an expert but I've been told the LA's cast has pretty popular actors and all. Slim chance but it's possible I guess. It'd need about/a little over 1M per week to win the year which is a very hard task, albeit having a lot of volumes does help even though it cannot compete with KnY or even JJK on a per volume basis at all.

Spoiler: show
Yes!!! The actor for Doraken was also the actor from Itazura na Kiss Love in Tokyo! Itakiss is one of the most popular/successful Live action adapted from a manga (Currently has 2 Japanese Drama and 1 Movie adaptation, 1 Taiwanese Drama and 1 Taiwanese Movie and 1 Korean Drama) The character in Itakiss is kinda similar to Doraken and I am sure he will do a phenomenal job!

Takemichi's actor was also the actor for the live action of Kimi no Suizo wo Tabetai and Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare
a shojo manga by Io Sakisaka the same author as Ao Haru Ride, which we'll be getting an anime soon.

The actor for Mikey is Ryo Yoshizawa was also the actor for Aya Kominato (Side character from Ao Haru Ride Live Action) and another side character from Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji (another shoujo manga) and the lead role for Marmalade Boy and Anoko no Toriko! I think his most famous role is from the Kamen Rider Franchise

I can't wait to be able to watch this live action

If we base on this "unofficial" estimated calculation, will KNY be considered as the King of Manga?

Thanks Rouk'.

Slight increase over its previous volume for Jujutsu Kaisen, but this is also a 3-day result versus a 4-day result, so it's still showing signs of some growth. And with two volumes selling over 1 million copies in their first week, JJK is now just the fourth series to ever achieve this feat (after One Piece, Attack on Titan, and Demon Slayer). JJK's author is taking a hiatus due to their health, expected to be about a month, so we'll probably only see one more volume released this year.

Does this number for One Piece include the day 0 sales? If so, it's still impressive, but is indeed a bit of a dip. The next year or so will be interesting to watch how it performs though with the release of volume 100 this fall, and the current arc presumably nearing its conclusion.

Spy x Family and Kaiju No. 8 remain strong, both continuing to grow. Spy x Family just over 50,000 shy of its previous volume with 4 days less of sales, and Kaiju No. 8 increasing by about 18,000 with 1 day less of sales versus its previous volume.

AoT at number 1 at 1.1 million
JJK dropped to number 3
One piece fell at number 4
A lot of new entries (except for number 5 and 6) probably because new volume dropped

KnY 2020 record is 82,345,447. #2 would be OP 2011 with 37,996,373.

Those numbers are just physical copies and from around 3000 locations, whom Oricon cooperates with.

That's huge for Attack on Titan. Being an older series, it doesn't have much backlog sales, so the vast majority of that 1,118,485 came from the final volume. The volumes in recent years have been doing around 500,000/600,000 in their first week, so an increase from them was likely for the final volume, 700,000/800,000 would have been a major accomplishment, but it looks like it may have sold perhaps 900,000 or potentially even reached 1,000,000 again.

The last AOT volume to sell over 900,000 in its first week was #17 back in 2015, and the last to break 1 million in its first week was #18 also back in 2015.

The final volume looks locked to have cracked the Top 10 biggest first weeks in the series, and depending on where the actual figure is with tomorrow's report, it might have reached as high as the Top 5.

Just to clarify, Volume 0 is NOT counted in JJK's total, correct? I'm pretty sure Shueisha includes it when they update JJK's shipment milestones, so why is it excluded by Oricon?

If so, it's a little weird that it's not. I understand Gaiden volumes and spin-offs and such (they usually have someone other than the author illustrate them and aren't directly linked to the main series in many cases), but Volume 0 in JJK's case is pretty central to the main story and is both written and illustrated by Gege Akutami.

This would be true normally, however, the final volume brought back a lot of backlog for AoT, see:

And the full color volume should also be included in the total. Rough estimation, but backlog+fullcolor should be in the range of 250-300k, maybe a little more, I'm on mobile so I can't be too precise on it.

Oricon is...somewhat weird with these things. Volume 0 isn't counted as the same series by them, and I would guess the reasoning for this is that the full title isn't just volume 0, but Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, so...different title, different series to them, basically, would be my guess as to why it's not included.

But again, oricon is a little weird. Fanbooks are excluded, however character books are included (they boosted 5toubun's total a good amount last year), for example. So uhhh...yeah.

That said Shueisha's circulation number is series, so it would include even spinoffs, novels, or fanbooks. Same goes for KNY and plenty of other series.
