Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021 (Apr. 19-25)
If Season 2 will not air in Summer, it will be hard for the series to hold its position in Weekly Top 10 until Fall. Since February, there has been no reprint schedules for KNY so I assume the demand gradually goes down.

Let's hope Season 2 will boost the sales of volume 9+.

Imagine somehow the demand for JJK drops significantly enough that it is unable to close the gap by the time Season 2 comes out!

With this pace, there is no doubt that JJK will surpass KNY sooner or later. In my opinion, it may be around the end of May.

The only scenario where JJK cannot beat KNY is that Gege does something guilty like the Act-Age's writer, which is unlikely possible.

Don't get me wrong, I watched both JJK and KNY. I enjoyed 24 episodes of JJK. They are really good, but KNY episodes give me more emotional impacts.

KNY has already been a emotional series based on the the reaction, comments I searched and read on the internet at least from Japan's people side.

Imagine somehow the demand for JJK drops significantly enough that it is unable to close the gap by the time Season 2 comes out!

This is literally impossible. Even if the backlog just died overnight (also not happening btw, but since we're arguing in hypotheticals) Jujutsu is going to have 2 more volumes this year while KnY will have 0. Those alone will bridge the gap and more.

Also I just saw the JjK is being released here in Netflix, Singapore. I am sure more countries will soon get it as well. That would possibly increase the hype around the series further though the manga sales we talk here are mostly domestic.

True, but assuming that Season 2 comes out right when Mugen Train goes to DVD (as in June 16, 2021), how much of a bump would that give KnY and would Jujutsu have passed it by then? (Obviously the earliest we are expecting Season 2 is August/September (maybe even October).

I don't see BD release boosting sales particularly, why would it?
And S2 wouldn't air in august or september, obviously, it'd be either july if summer (very unlikely imho) or october if fall.

Jujutsu is almost guaranteed to overtake in june, the gap has closed off to a little over 3 million now and a new volume is releasing in that month.

I guess there's still printing issues for Shueisha last time because both JJK and DS Sales increased. So Happy for Tokyo Revengers! What anime can do!

Everything increased, most likely because of Golden Week

Depending on what will happen, this is probably the one year where One Piece will be at top 4, 5, or even 6.

Cause there's obviously KnY and JJK, then AoT and CSM might overtake it too.
And if TR continues this kind of week, then it's also a contender.
And lastly, Kingdom might also pull something outta it's sleeves.

Sadly, the anime doesn't seem to boost Kingdom, so I don't think it'll manage to beat One Piece this year.

I'm confident that Tokyo Revengers will get the third spot this year. Chainsaw Man has slowed down too much to beat One Piece (unless part 2 comes back soon and the new volumes are counted together by Oricon).

So at worst, I see One Piece at #5, with numbers not that far from AoT's but still below it.

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021 (May 03-09)
Tokyo Revengers is a pleasant surprise this year so far, yet another hit in a string of recent newer series' that have found big success in the last couple of years. The shift in the market going from the charts being dominated by older established series for many years (decades, really) to newer series suddenly breaking out much more often, and even outperforming the established series', is very interesting.

I wonder if it's due to COVID opening up the market to new readers from staying home more often, looking for sources of entertainment. And then the newer series' (think Demon Slayer) that first began to breakout from these new readers also contributed to this sudden explosion in other newer series' as the new readers seek out other titles to read. Older series are still doing well enough, just nothing outside of their usual numbers, likely because they're too long for new readers to really be interested in and/or they've already been invested in them.

Because up until 2019, really, the manga charts were quite predictable with the same titles always dominating with an occasional newer series doing well every couple years (Tokyo Ghoul, Assassination Classroom, etc.), but never really achieving the same type of success as the older ones. This suggested the market was largely stagnant with mostly the same readers every year, not really expanding to new readers/demographics very often.

Manga has been a vital part of the Japanese pop culture for several decades, so it does not easily die out. For recent years, Youtube, Korean manhwa, and piracy have become threats to the industry. Luckily, the manga industry survives and thrives as we see right now.

I hope new authors will have more chance to publish their works with higher pays. It seems that manga about reincarnation/ life reset are popular these days. Let's see if Tokyo Revengers can be the new flag ship for Kodansha in the future.

Thanks @Rouk'

It is rare to see Top 50 include so many volumes of both JJK and Tokyo Revengers at the same time. In 2020, only KNY was able to occupy Top 50 consistently for months.

Here we go again. :funny: The Top 50 consisting mostly (74%) of just two series' like last Fall/Winter.

Since Oricon began tracking sales in 2008, situations like this never really occurred until last year. Just more evidence of how the manga industry has changed and opened up to a lot of new readers that strongly favor newer series'.

Welp, looks like JJK will settle with 200-300k per week with new volumes, it will be 700-1mil per week.
It's a shame, JJK ended up being the flavor of the year instead of being a phenomenon like KnY.
