Comes down to Gaetz who wasn't in the room when the roll call came to him. If he votes present, McCarthy's got it. If he votes other, McCarthy lost again.

And the House Rules package, suppose to go up tonight IF McCarthy wins, is also in doubt because moderate Rs seem quite displeased over it. One has already come out saying he's a NO on it.

Assuming McCarthy gets this tonight, or at some point, his life is going to be hellish trying to appease the crazies without pissing off the moderates.

Whatever happens, Gaetz wins. He can either continue to block McCarthy and get all the attention, etc., or he can be the final vote to deliver the Speakership to McCarthy. Why in the fuck did they allow this lunatic (Gaetz) to get in this position of power? :zonks:

And McCarthy failed again after his staff seemed confident he was going to win this tonight. And he stormed up the floor to speak directly to Gaetz to get him to change his vote. He is so pissed.

And someone attempted to lunge at Gaetz and was held back...

EDIT: Failed pending no one changes their vote before the official count is finalized.

This is going to be the House all the time this session. McCarthy is dealing with a bunch of crazies, but he's also suppose to be able to count and NOT take things to the floor unless he's confident he's got the votes.

I'd be more sympathetic towards Gaetz if he had a viable alternative to Mccarthy, but this is just theater at this point. No one else wants the job.

Sources I'm looking at show Gaetz voted present, so doesn't that mean Mccarthy won?

No, he needed to vote McCarthy. The majority is 217.

So that means only one of Rosendale or Crane flipped their vote, and there were five votes for someone other than mccarthy.

Crane flipped. Rosendale definitely won't; he's been mocking all this. Funnily... the McCarthy camp said Rosendale was going to vote present, but he didn't. Surprise! (Not.) No idea why you'd believe him (or any of these 6 or 7 people).

McCarthy's side said they had the votes tonight. IF McCarthy gets this next week or month, this is going to happen all the damn time when they think they have the votes on legislation. This is what sunk the previous Republican Speakers (Boehner, Ryan); they couldn't handle their members and stepped down / resigned because of it. And McCarthy is getting off on an even worse foot (he's not even on his feet yet).

McCarthy is to blame though. He's appeased these people doing this to him. He's helped shape the current House GOP. What happened, IMO, he thought the GOP would have a red wave where he didn't have to worry about them. But, obviously, that was a failed strategy and another reason why he's not leadership material.

Wowza. GOP called to adjourn until Monday... and right before the vote closed, McCarthy ran down with a red card to have the GOP begin changing their votes to have another Speaker (15th) vote instead... McCarthy was patting Gaetz on the back, so maybe, MAYBE he'll win this time going into Saturday morning.

EDIT: Gaetz is going to vote McCarthy this next ballot (according to sources on the floor). Why he didn't just vote McCarthy on the last ballot to prevent this from going to ANOTHER ballot... who knows. He's such a menace.

And no lessons will be learned unfortunately it would seem. The GOP leadership is doubling down on pulling further into partisanship in the House. Hyper partisanship is becoming increasingly unpopular

Congrats to McCarthy. Now let's see what happens with the Rules Package on Monday, whether any single member calls for a vote to oust him, or if a handful of sane Republicans read it over and realize what they've signed up for and vote no (1, to my knowledge, has come out against it already), or when raising the debt ceiling comes up, or when they bring something to the floor and are stunned that they miscounted (again) and it gets stalled.

I'd bet McCarthy steps down and/or resigns in the next 4 years like the last two Republican Speakers. He's given up far more and has even more unruly members than either Boehner or Ryan.

Actually I think it’s the opposite. Because there’s nothing else truly significant that can change in Washington in 2023. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kiev falls to Russia before Kevin McCarthy leaves the speakership. You might assume that somehow that’s not true, and that something will give, but this is a time when all those assumptions are ending. The only way anything will change is if the USA (or America, if you like) and its allies lose hope and admit defeat to reality and all their problems. I don’t expect that to happen anytime soon; so until they surrender, these patterns will continue. Perhaps they can lose hope or surrender without realizing or being aware of it, but that’s no different than all of American history. For anything to change they have to reconsider the things they care most about and I think that’s unfathomable to them. They may go silent, but I don’t think they will stop believing or fighting for the “American Dream”. America always was the lost child of history; the promised land; the false heaven; or hell if you like; it tried to weave together the fragments of past and future; of life and death; of truth and false; of hope, denial, progress and regression; of all earth and its promised colonies; of victory and defeat. Until the completion of its decline; still in typical American fashion triumphed with false, shortsighted, gains. And it’s enduring “ghost”. I would say “rest in peace” but that’s impossible. Like it or not, I think of all your enemies, I’ve written the best obituary you could expect. Because the dead don’t write obituaries, do they?
