With the fifth vote failing, how many total rounds will there be?

I'm thinking 12 rounds of voting.

McCarthy should remove himself. He's had weeks, months, arguably years, to lock this up and he hasn't. He can't win. There are four or five NOs he's not going to persuade, and five is enough to keep him from the Speakership. And he's been unable to get the other 15 voting against him on board as well. Maybe some of them will come over after X ballots, but expecting all of them to is also very unrealistic.

As soon as he steps aside, the member who the party agrees on will take it.

Sucks for the people at the end of the list alphabetically. Those that vote early on can leave and have ~30-45 mins to eat or something, but the people voting last only get 10 minutes or so before they have to be present for the next round of voting.

I just hope we don’t get a radical as the Speaker

Now he lost the 8th ballot.

Will he give the f up already and withdraw?

What are these 3 other votes now, moving from Donalds? The lady voting present wants more negotiations, but it sounds like McCarthy has given up almost everything but what actually would make him speaker. If he gives up anymore, assuming that's enough to get 16 of the 20 out of that..., it's going to make the House nigh ungovernable.

There goes the 9th.

They need to adjourn and either come to an agreement or stop nominating Mccarthy.

Can’t the Democrats vote too? I mean they could find a super moderate Republican and get a few other moderate Republicans at this point to support them if I am not mistaken?

Another strategy is for McCarthy give something to the moderate/conservative DEMS. It would make both McCarthy (and the GOP) and the DEMS look good (working together, pushing back against the "rebels"), and McCarthy could take back some of the stuff he's "agreed" to give up to the rebels to give him some power back.

This is a prime example of why you shouldn't let the extremes of either side do as they please, not call them out, not remove them from committees, etc., as McCarthy did with most of these people now voting against him. McCarthy (and the GOP in general with the far-right wing the last ~6 years) bent over backward for them, and now look what's happened. They had a crappy midterm that should have seen big gains, and they can't even elect a Speaker. Just imagine how much legislation is going to suffer in the House this session.

The democrats are hoping a motion goes through for the speaker to be voted in by plurality and it goes to jeffries, which is why all 212 are continually rallied around him.

And McCarthy just lost another vote from someone. Down to 200 this ballot. Wasn't he at 201?

The House can't exactly function (efficiently...) with the concessions McCarthy has given up, or may possibly give up further. And if he gives up more, he also risks losing supporters and still fall short of what he needs.

One member right now (with what McCarthy has already given up) can hold up anything and everything and begin a vote just like this by calling for the Speaker to be removed to stall / delay any sort of legislation. If there's anything one member dislikes on any bill, and a majority don't vote in favor of the Speaker to remain in power, we're back to what we're seeing here.

(There's not even enough votes to adjourn tonight and some members are apparently leaving tomorrow for doctor appointments.)

What should be scarier? Friday January 6th, or Friday January the 13th? Really ironic that this has now dragged into the two year anniversary. With no end in sight…

They should adjourn if no one gets 217 on the first vote. The subsequent votes are not going to get better for Mccarthy.

One Democrat voted for Mccarthy on the most recent ballot. He finally managed to win a plurality. Seems like he may be eventually able to pull it out.

Three members aren't there today: 2 Republicans (one family death, the other with their newborn being taken to the hospital) and 1 Democrat (surgery today I think). However, the Democrat is now flying back to D.C. given what happened on the 12th ballot to make the math harder for McCarthy.

McCarthy did flip 14 of the 21 in his favor though, so he needs to flip 3 of the 7 never Kevin's, or have enough members vote "present" (maybe some of the 7 so they're still not technically voting for him), removing them from the majority needed, so that he can win with 213 to Jefferies 212.
