I don't think it's a matter of convincing people or trying persuasive messaging regarding abortion.

The Supreme Court turned it back over to the states to handle. And so far, every state where voters have had their say on the ballot, they've voted to protect abortion rights. The only states where it might be more challenging is Mississippi and Alabama. I'd add Utah here, but Mormons rely on church leaders and their faith in God to help them make decisions, not the government, so while they largely oppose abortion, they probably wouldn't want the government interfering. So I can see Utah protecting abortion rights too.

There are some Republicans now wanting to ignore the Supreme Court's decision by supporting a national ban on abortion, which also ignores states rights which they used to fight for.

People don't like when the government gets involved in their lives. Never have, never will. It's a universal human desire to be allowed to make your own choices. And it's even more true when someone is trying to make decisions for your children. As a parent, you want to protect and make what you believe are the best choices for your child. And if the government is telling you that they will decide if your 12-year-old daughter who got kidnapped while waiting on the bus for school and raped must have their attackers child, the vast majority aren't going to let that fly.

Maybe there's a compromise to be had, such as the 15-week restriction that also allows for exceptions that Youngkin was pushing for, but voters are saying no to that too. In the end, it's still taking choice, freedoms, away from people and their children. And it's clearly on the minds of many voters that it my not stop there when some in the GOP (including their highest elected official) are wanting a national ban.

DeSantis would have lost in general due to his abortion bill even if he wasn’t flaming out in primary. Trump and Haley being comparatively neutral on it is a good choice.

I don't think republicans can even call themselves conservatives anymore after this. Everything they used to stand for has been sacrificed in the name of either banning abortion or deifying Donald Trump.

I've been pushing for four political parties for awhile now ... but maybe the right answer is no political parties. Ohio goes heavily red whenever there is a D and an R on the ballot, but supports liberalism when the issues are presented as they are without affiliation to the parties. As a matter of fact, why do we even need elected leaders anymore? With the advancing technology, we the people of the United States of American could just vote on every issue ourselves. The people we elect do nothing but slow down the process of progress (even progressives do this) and often seem more interested in helping themselves than the country, state or city.

Right. Elected office is all about acquiring wealth and benefits now. It has been for a long while, but it's become increasingly the dream gig for personal self-interest. The idea of electing someone to make decisions for you is also pretty anti-choice. You try to vote for the person who represents you best, and even if that works for a while, the power the office grants eventually leads to corruption. They always try to justify it by saying "my constituents elected me to because my will is their will." Vance from Ohio, despite his own state voting to protect abortion rights, is wanting the federal government to ignore SCOTUS and to overturn the will of his own voters as well. Absolute power corrupts absolutely is an age-old proven phrase.

And when the decisions of a miniscule few (sometimes even just one person) impacts the lives of everyone nationwide and ignores the will of the majority, then the system has encountered an error.

IT's at least better to have voters choose abortion than have it shoved down by the supreme court.

Just shows we have work to do in convincing people of the evil of abortion.
The Rhode island election isn't an upset, that's the heavy blue RI district. It's the second district that's purple.

Once the Utah vacancy is filled, we'll be back to the same 222-213 makeup we were at in Nov 2022

Haley, so far, has the best answer to how the GOP needs to approach abortion in the post-Roe environment.

Will the party unite and get on board with this? Absolutely not. They've become too boxed-in on this issue and/or want to push their own beliefs on the subject onto others regardless that it's not something the majority in every state with it on the ballot so far has rejected.

America tends to agree with many actual Democrat policies if you separate them from the party, but due to successful character assassination, the GOP has done a very good job of getting voters to think all of their problems in life are due to Democrats. In actual practice, most of the Democrats in power are just moderate conservatives which is why I probably vote Democrat now over Republican which I did when I was younger.

Nikki Haley is the only one of these people who ever sounds remotely sane and for that reason alone I can't see her making it to a general with all the MAGA extremists rotting the Republican party.

GOP has created a huge problem for themselves with Biden presentation. The guy is still very mentally with it and sharp, and good lord does Trump come off insane by comparison. Another debate between these 2 would be the death of MAGA moment.

Most likely to be elected (taking into account % of nomination + winning)

1. Biden
2. Trump
3. Haley
4. Harris
5. Newsom
6. Ramaswamy
7. DeSantis

Scott drops out because the big party donors were upset he's unmarried?

Maybe strategists should see if they can persuade Melania to divorce Trump.

It’s all excuses. Trump is gonna win the nomination unless he drops out to focus on his trials. I think this has a dark horse shot of happening once shit starts getting real for him. Right now though I think he doesn’t take these trials anymore series than them being political moves. However there is the argument which is probably more likely that he is running to stay out of prison and an argument that is less likely that he ran in 2016 to avoid the fraud trial altogether

Republicans told Tim Scott after a few dates he’s a “really nice guy” but they don’t have feelings for him

Not a good way to win young voters to your side. Gen Z is all about being very kind and tolerant in person but then they turn into nasty bitches online. Shit, even having the stuff we say here on world of kj linked to us in real life would probably be a lot of trouble.

Oh well, I should have known a Republican wouldn't be able to stay in my good graces for very long. :P

Biden with epic economic news over the past few days had an excellent day with Xi and is still very with it at his press conference.

Compare the substance and speed of Biden at his press conference this evening vs. Trump, they aren't even comparable whatsoever, the gap has grown since 2020.

Dude have you actually watched Trump? Kudos to right wing propaganda machine for hiding how spacy and incoherent Trump has been in his speeches.

I'm not saying Trump is completely coherent in his speeches, but you can't call Biden eloquent and with it

Both are 80-year-olds who have 80-year-old moments. Doesn't necessarily mean they can't perform the duties the office demands, but it's still a concern since decline in cognition and memory are more likely to accelerate at this advanced age than see signs of improvement.

They're the same age/older than Bill Clinton and George Bush... We'll likely lose four currently living Presidents within the next 10-15 years. I'm going to assume this has never happened before.

The average age of the current US Senate is 64, with over half of them (54) over 65.

The good news regarding our aging government is that many are stepping down/passing the torch. All the DEM leadership in the house gave their positions up this session for a younger generation. Several 70/80 year-olds aren't seeking re-election next year in both chambers. And whatever happens for the Presidency, neither Biden or Trump have much time left.

So... once we get over this hump in the next year or so, we should be seeing younger names running the government within maybe 10 years.
