Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
More confirmation that the shooter was just another right wing gun nut who wanted to destroy the government. Apparently he also wanted to assassinate Joe Biden and Merit Garland. Problem is these facts will get lost on people

I can’t be the only one who thinks that it was an inside job… by Trump. The whole “assassination attempt” is fake, total fabrication. Trump is a master media manipulator, the optics and timing of the whole thing are too perfect for him. That’s your conspiracy (truth).

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
I don’t subscribe to conspiracy theories. Especially as Vance and those on the right are pushing for an investigation. If it was an inside job the truth will get revealed soon enough

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
This is practically and effectively no different than when Sparta destroyed Athens, or when the Roman Republic ended. Or for that matter: Revenge of the Sith. I meant it as jest when Donald Trump won the Republican nomination in 2016, but you were not content with anything less than the suicidal destruction of your political system. Your system has no sustainable prospects or future; your best hope is corporate control.
This is my favorite month in the history of politics, at least since I began reading the news. It’s less to mean that it’s a good month, and more to mean that all other months were far worse.
End: Forced Obligation to Pretend I Even Care About it That Much.

This era is going to seem so crazy looking back at it when it's like a Nikki Haley vs Josh Shapiro election in 2030s or something.

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
Now it is really starting to feel like the Dem elites are about to force a move on from Biden. I think Kamala is underrated but it's pretty clear new faces are needed.
Whitmer-Warnock would be my choice. I would guess the odds that that combo wins all 3 of Michigan, PA, and GA are very high, and with that comes the presidency. The appeal of that ticket to urban and suburban would be immense.

They are not getting rid of Biden, but if they did Kamala would be the candidate.

Biden is collapsing on betting markets after it appears Obama shiv'd him.
A sleeper I heard is Maryland governor Wes Moore because they could be afraid to replace Harris with a non black person and they don't have many other options that are a governor or senator.

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
Biden is getting so crushed in the polls that it looks like nothing is going to save him, the media is certainly, probably rightfully, not helping...so it means either, he's going to lose by a landslide or he'll get replaced, but at this point, I don't think anyone else is just going to beat Trump this year...so close to the election, momentum is on his side and a dem change is going to spark that candidate for a bit, but it's both too far for that spark to still be there at election day and too close to the election to build a winning foundation at the same time. So, since it's a lost cause for the Dems anyway, it's probably best to just let Biden lose than lose with a fresh face, i wonder who even wants to campaign against Trump now. The Dems simply put their eggs in the wrong basket with this Biden re-run. But Trump isn't popular in the sense of the whole country either, and I think it's going to be a much lower turn out vote anyway.

Never thought I would hear "THE LATE GGREAT HANNIBAL LECTER" credited in presidential convention acceptance speech.
That was a complete, utter disaster, holy crap.

Trump used to give good speeches but the last few years he kind of just goes through talking points for 90 minutes

Agreed. Stick with Biden. If they lose, they lose. Start afresh with a new face for the 2028 election.

Trump’s speech bombed, but I don’t think enough people watched anything past the first few minutes

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
That’s an empty promise to get votes. Trump also promised a payroll tax cut during his first presidency and instead it was just a tax cut for the wealthy.
As for Biden I really feel awful for him. He’s had one of the most successful presidencies of my life time. He re-unitied NATO, passed meaningful infrastructure bills to help set up the country for success down the road, helped get the supply chain issue under control (inflation rates are way better here than in other parts of the globe), and has been a masterful bi-partisan politician. And now the party who’s back he’s always had is pushing him out. It has to feel like the ultimate betrayal. I do think he is too old and that he should have only served one term, but this whole situation is just so sad to see him go through.

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
I heard a good take that Biden biggest regret is not running in 2016 and the same people telling him to step down like Obama and Pelosi now were the ones telling him it was Hillary's turn back then. Now if he steps down and Harris loses, it would be repeating history that he would feel he could have beaten Trump and had to watch their pick mess it up.

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
If instead of Kamala running she goes with this master plan:
She declines replacing Biden, lets Newsom, Whitmer, etc. take it and they become sacrifical lamb against post assassination attempt Trump.
Next 4 years progressives say "Kamala would've won!" and calling the Democrats racist. Team Kamala secretly leak some rumors to the media that it was never her choice after all.
In 2028 primary they're under tons of pressure to nominate Harris this time, it becomes like 2016 where everyone clears out of the way.
Democrats are favored in general after another 4 years of Trump.
Is this better odds for her than taking her shot at Trump now? Where it can go wrong is if the Newsom/Whitmer type person actually beats Trump.

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
There's no way Kamala wins a primary, so her best shot would be now. Not that she'll win, but she could at least make a respectable campaign and it would just be interesting to see what kind of popular vote she could get, if if she even just narrowly loses and with the added profile it could help her in the future. If she steps out of the limelight now, that progressives are going to boost her in next 4 years I just don't see happening at all.

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
Democrats are losing the progressive party as moderate conservative suburban voters are starting to move in. I mean look at the most recent primaries. The Democrats are become the party of the Suburban College Educated voter that wants stability here and abroad. They hate Trump and the new economically populist and isolationist GOP which is pushing for more a coalition of blue collar, uneducated, rural, Christian voters.
It is a new time

Re: 2024 election - First presidential debate
I think we are past the first presidential debate era and are onto the bigger story now which is who is replacing Biden and more over who is replacing Kamala as the VP pick. Safe pick is Josh Shapiro, but I think Mark Kelly would help fight win over the conservative types

Insider Talk was all saying this was inevitable. So not surprised. What an election cycle though!
