Post Favourite Film of 1979
I've just listened to Tarantino's list of every film he saw in 1979, and you know Quentin, he doesn't just list things. He talked for over an hour about them. He said the film he enjoyed the most was Rocky II, the film he had the intense relationship with was The Deer Hunter (officially a '79 film but released for a week in '78 to qualify for the Oscars), and his best film in terms of being "The Movie of the Year" was Apocalypse Now.

So I was interested in what you guys have as your favourite.

Some great movies this year

1. Apocalypse Now (top 5 all time)
2. Alien (top 20 all time)
3. All That Jazz
4. Life of Brian
5. Kramer vs Kramer
6. Being There
7. Manhattan (actually not a fan despite Allen being my favorite director)

Haven't seen the Rocky sequels other than Rocky Balboa and mostly forgot the first. I'll count The Deer Hunter as 78, but it would've been 3rd.

I think easily my favourite film is Rocky II.

Others that would challenge for second place are Kramer vs Kramer, Manhattan, and Escape from Alcatraz.

I also love Cactus Jack (aka: The Villain) so that would round out my top five. Or Escape to Athena, that's a childhood favourite.

Seen few films, so here's my ranking of all of them.

1. Apocalypse Now
2. Rocky II
3. Fast Break
4. Mad Max
5. Kramer v Kramer
6. Alien
7. Moonraker

I'll just count The Deer Hunter as 1978 as well then, but great film, would be 5-6 in 1979 then.

I have 12 films from 1979 rated on letterbox.

1. The Warriors - 5/5 - Best Picture
2. Alien - 4.5
3. Apocalypse Now - 4.5
4. Life of Brian - 4
5. 1941 - 4 - I actually just watched this for the first time last night and thought it was great!
6. Rocky 2 - 4
7. Kramer vs Kramer vs Predator - 3.5
8. Manhattan - 3 - I barely remember this one though
9. Mad Max - 3
10. Time After Time - 2.5 - I thought I'd like this one alot more
11. Star Trek: The Motion Picture - 2 - everyone knows the even numbered Treks are the good ones
12. The Black Hole - .5 - ... but why?

on the watchlist: Stalker, The Brood, Escape From Alcatraz, Lupin, Phantasm, The Jerk , and probably more but that's enough for now lol.

Escape from Alcatraz is probably my favorite of the year. Dam this is a great year.

1. Escape From Alcatraz
2. Apocalypse Now
3. Rocky II
4. Alien
5. Phantasm
6. The China Syndrome
7. The Muppet Movie
8. Kramer Vs. Kramer
9. Nosferatu
10. The Great Santini

Honorable Mentions: The Jerk, The Brood, Salem's Lot (TV) Meatballs, The Warriors, Mad Max Life of Brian, And Justice for All

Star Trek : TMP is way too boring and Moonraker is terrible.

I watched Stalker and would put it at #7, above KvK and below Rocky 2. It was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be - a brilliant and expertly made movie where nothing really happens. 7/10ish.

It's the type of film that snobs like Mark Kermode would say is the best film of the 1970s.

I wish I could say Mad Max but it's Apocalypse Now (got the chance to see it in on the big screen a few years ago and really blew me away on a whole new level) and Alien.
