Post Nolan's Oppenheimer starring Murphy/Blunt/RDJ/Damon
Movie about Oppenheimer set in WW2 time. Should be explosive for sure.

https://variety.com/2021/film/news/chri ... 235060488/

Big question is which studio will pick it up as nolan is shopping it around. I hope he does it with netflix with netflix distributing it via some other studio for overseas markets.

Edit: With Universal starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr and Matt Damon.

Could not be more interested in this. The Manhattan Project is extremely interesting and as is Oppenheimer.

Sounds like Nolan is ready for another oscar run … But I think it’s more likely he joins Kubrick and Tarantino on the “how the fuck did this guy never win an oscar list?”

Dunkirk was so good though, so if he wants to invert back to WW2 again then we are all the better for it.

The problem is that he over-directs his movies in order to build spectacle he forgets to bring heart to a movie which is what academy rejects. Any "aha" moment like in TDK (specially towards end) doesn't necessarily bring closure to a truly emotional character arc.

Batman Begins TDK Inception TDKR and interstellar are highly emotional films.

Dunkirk was ice cold and I never understood the insane acclaim.

He needs a smaller scope movie which this could be.

Nolan does not get rejected by the Academy, already 3 of his films got nominations.

Yeah, he didn't win, but there's loads of great films that didn't.

Most of his films have plenty of heart and over-directing is not a problem.

One Best Director nomination thus far and that was for a gritty world war film released in December. Sure they don't reject him but shower him with tons of awards every year. Poor Meryl Streep she thought she was secure with her life long 21(or more) acting nominations.

Cold cold movies with tons of music, try watching his last decade movies just 10 minutes without sound effects. There's absolute over-direction in most of his movies to make simple things complex narration wise to challenge audience and come out smart it worked in TDK (and his earlier movies) but that does not mean every movie has to do that. Movies having heart does not mean emotional characters and their arcs are conveyed convincingly, most people remember TDK for Ledger acting and character wise, Inception for Leo, i.e. you remember actors and visuals and not characters other than pre-established ones like Batman and Joker.

Now in terms of ideas Nolan is possibly the freshest in business (possibly ever) and most of his movies have great budget thus brilliant visuals.

Universal will finance and distribute the movie. No cast finalized so far despite Cillian Murphy being offered a role rumors.

Variety has more details

Shooting starts early next year. Late 2023 or 2024 release date due to extensive digital effects.

Nolan wanted a 90-120 day window. The final window isn't known, but it's not Uni's standard 17/31 days.
Nolan has final cut and a backend deal.
Universal is under a 3 week blackout period like WB was and can't schedule other films close to this.

How long do you think? So his movies have extensive VFX that run for a few months at the very least.

Despite obvious jokes, he cant go nuclear and so it will take time. But this seems too long even for that. This is not going to be shot like Avatar which takes 2 years to complete post production. We will know more early next year as production work would start.

Before that we will know who will headline this movie. I wonder if there will be a big name for a movie like this.

Pattinson would be a good Openhiemer, or maybe this is the big Josh Hartnett comeback movie.

I’ve kind of burnt out on Nolan, last of his I enjoyed (/loved) was Interstellar in 2014.

But I’m wondering if this might be less of a “war movie” and more of a psychological / social / techno type exploration of morality with some mind-bending thriller aspects. Variety article says it includes the years (maybe decades?) following Oppenheimer’s creation of the A-bomb, including his opposition to it. I’m hoping it’s both “its own fresh thing” as well as a return-to-form of sorts for Nolan (pre-Batman / huge spectacle era, i.e. Prestige and Memento).

Couldn't be more interested but not sold on its financial prospects whatsoever.

Cillian Murphy is a good actor but couldn't he have found a different actor to work with? With the same actors, similar cinematography it just feels Nolan is playing within his comfort zone again. Too early but we'll see.

Cillian has had only small roles in previous nolan movies. Here he gets lead role. Good for him. I am sure we will see new faces as well. Tenet had JDW/RP/ED all worked with Nolan for the 1st time. But there was Kenneth Branaugh who was in Dunkirk and in Tenet and Michael Caine appeared in 1 scene.

I wish he would cast Leo again. But he is too big a star for a movie like this. That will add significant costs. i am not expecting any major stars in this movie.

I really hope they capture the sense of impending doom that was felt though much of the USA early in the war. It is so difficult to capture it given everyone knows how it ends, but if the USA had any other option - or if they were the only nation developing such weapons - than obvious they would have opted against the use of the nukes which is now widely condemned. They probably saved 500k more lives than the nukes killed by using them.

So much cinematic potential still untapped w/ the US roll in WW2. The Manhattan Project and a (real) movie about Pearl Harbor could be big critical and commercial hits if well done. Nolan is basically tackling subject #1.
