Post Mandated inclusion drivers for Best Picture eligibility
To be eligible for best picture, films must meet the standards of two out of four categories laid out in a press release on Tuesday: “Onscreen Representation, Themes and Narratives,” “Creative Leadership and Project Team,” “Industry Access and Opportunities” and “Audience Development.”

This is dumb and I hate it. We’ll see more artificiality injected into films. It’s an overcorrection, typical of Hollywood.

A lot of buzzwords that probably won't mean anything. Would any of these past nominees been disaqualified for not having these things?

What does the first and third term even mean? Only movies having themes of less represented groups will be eligible?

Also what the heck is Audience Development? Ideally most of the current set of movies would go under #2 and #4

What's going to end up happening is the studios will have to set up a 'Elegibility Compliance' department that makes sure all their oscar contenders satisfy criteria C and D, the ones that don't have anything to do with the film itself per se, and a bunch of people will get a cushy job where they don't do much and sign NDAs.

So based on the new criteria, which past winners wouldn't have won? Argo, Spotlight, The Hurt Locker, and The Departed?

I think they would rather just meet the behind the scenes requirements if given the choice between that and affecting the on screen product

I posted this in the other thread:

So basically any films put out by major studios including their arthouse imprints would qualify under these rules, regardless of the diversity in the cast or behind the camera.

Films that are independently distributed may need to pay more attention to these criteria.

Thanks i.hope. Good points all around. Years down the road, I can see the Academy coming back and saying that the workarounds the studios inevitably figure out aren’t in line with the spirit of the mandate.
