Post Best of the Film Festival & Movie Night Schedule
Much like out "Best of 2006, etc) threads, members who will be viewing movies can keep running tabs, grades, and breif anticipation comments here. This thread is not per country, it is a total list, so that other members can see what is being viewed, responses to the films, etc.

Hosts and host threads:

Deathawk and Kypade: Japanese Film Festival
Getluv: Down Under Film Festival Australia/New Zealand Film Festival
Dr. Lecter: Scandanavian Film Festival
Rogue and Zennier: Spanish Language Film Festival
Dolcevita and Mr Price: Italian Language Film Festival
Yoshue: French Film Festival
Gullimont-Kyro: Irish Film Festival

FILM NIGHTS!

This year for something special, each host has his/her own "film night."

I will keep a schedule here, and anyone interested in a respective thread can try to have film nights together. This in no way changes the fact that everyone can watch any movie from a country they are interested at any time, but it is more an event in which everyone can watch a film together and multiple people can discuss the movie together. We have done several of these in the past, and they can be pretty interesting.

What we have so far:

FRIDAY OCT. 20th: Nine Queens
SUNDAY OCT. 22nd: Seven Beauties
TUESDAY OCT. 24th: Ikiru
THURSDAY OCT. 26th: Breaking the Waves
FRIDAY OCT. 27th: A Little Princess
SUNDAY OCT. 29th: Day for Night
TUESDAY OCT. 31st: Profondo Rosso
THURSDAY NOV. 2nd: Deathawk's Selection
SATURDAY NOV. 4th: Somersault
SUNDAY NOV. 5th: Gullimont-Kyro's Selection

Hosts, I still need some of your selections asap, so that people have time to get their hands on them before the festival begins next week. If you want to change your mind about your selection, now is the time to do it too, before people start ordering films by mail, purchasing them, etc.

Ok, final update on the DVD giveaways. Three participants and one host are going to get shiny new (as of yet to be selected) DVDs. Most likely from the host of their designation, who will then pick one for them as a recommendation.

Hosts will decide which three members will get the DVDs, and will base their decision pretty much on general enthusiasm and contribution to the festival.

Getluv and I will do likewise for one host.

Feel free to spread the news around!

Thanks everyone.

I wouldn't say that.... dolce is very selective with her grading and a B- suggests that the film was "good", but not "great".

I should be giving you flack for giving the same grade to Bad Education. :disgust:

Yeah, Rogue, what Zennier said. B- is still "fresh" but only so north of that. I didn't mind it, but I'm not watching it again. I'd like to hear more of what you thought. Why'd you love it so much, in SLF Thread.

Anyways, its not getting the roughest grade of a movie I've seen during this festival ;) :

1. Nine Queens: B
2. My Voyage in Italy: B+
3. Seven Beauties: A
4. A Little Princess: B-
5. Playtime: C+

1. The Bicycle Thief- A
2. Nine Queens- B
3. Seven Beauties- B+
4. Ikiru- B+
5. 8 1/2- A
6. Belle du Jour- A-

So, although I have tried in the past couple of years to pay attention to the festival, I have never really been able to pay attention to it in the end. How's this year going in comparison to the past two years?

Much busier and more participants and activity than last year. I think last year we didn't get a single thread past 40 posts, and this year we have two that might reach 100, and another 2 or 3 that might reach 40. Lots of viewings, and participants have really made an effort to go out and get their hands on some new movies they haven't seen. Also the hosts get better and better each year. I used to have to nag people like crazy behind the scenes the past two years, just to feed their threads, and this year everyone is excitedly doing it on their own. Great year, lots of interesting viewings. Good year to check this out. Next year, we'll try to make even more special events/viewings/activities, etc.

1. Nine Queens: B
2. My Voyage in Italy: B+
3. Seven Beauties: A
4. A Little Princess: B-
5. Playtime: C+
6. Profondo Rosso: B+

Then again, I'm biased towards Mastroianni.

Hosts: If you can keep your eye out this last weekend, Getluv and I need recs by Monday morning for your three most active/interesting members for the festival DVD giveaways. Feel free to send me pm with any questions. Getluv, check your pm box cause we need to decide how to pick a host for a DVD too.

So, what is everyone going to watch for the last weekend?

For the weekend, I've watched What Have I Done to Deserve This? and hope to see a few other comments - though my short review probably won't warrant much. I'm planning on writing up a commentary on Spanish directors and their success in 2006 - this is a huge year for Spanish language cinema and Spanish directors in general, and I think that makes for a nice bookend for the festival. I posted a short recap of The Flower of My Secret last weekend, and will also be putting up a better review to attract the likes of dar and rod, who *should* have seen it. They are the experts, after all.

Update:

New Viewings
1. Nine Queens - B
2. The Flower of My Secret - A- (upgraded)
3. What Have I Done to Deserve This? - B+

Revisits
4. All About My Mother - A-
5. Bad Education - A
6. Y Tu Mama Tambien - A-

Oh, and since I didn't get Seven Beauties in time, I'm going to watch the dubbed copy I *do* have. Not ideal, but I would like to watch at least one film - especially one with such high marks from everyone.
