So probably British opression of the Irish. ![]() Oh you know us brits just love opressin' ![]() OK a little more info: Plot Summary: Ireland 1920: workers from field and country unite to form volunteer guerrilla armies to face the ruthless "Black and Tan" squads that are being shipped from Britain to block Ireland's bid for independence. Driven by a deep sense of duty and a love for his country, Damien abandons his burgeoning career as a doctor and joins his brother, Teddy, in a dangerous and violent fight for freedom. As the freedom fighters' bold tactics bring the British to breaking point, both sides finally agree to a treaty to end the bloodshed. However, despite the apparent victory civil war erupts and families who fought side by side find themselves pitted against one another as sworn enemies, putting their loyalties to the ultimate test. Director: Ken Loach Starring: Cillian Murphy The IMDB score isn't exactly promising at 4.7, and reviews have been fairly split, but Loach has always intrigued me, i'm keen to see this one, hopefully over the weekend. Trailer can be seen here http://www.cinemas-online.co.uk/content ... t_b_hi.mov |

Just saw it tonight. (preview screening) Not sure how this will play with non Irish but I loved it, it was a very good "little country fighting an imperial bully" story with the add depth of the conflicting views of 2 brother's. I heard the English tabloid's have gone nut's over it saying it's anti-english which is a bit of bull since it protray's facts and doesn't paint them as complete demons or anything. By "The Patriot" standards it was very mild. In short if your a proud Irishperson you'll love it otherwise I can't say. |

It has been bouncing around for some time. It was in the 7s around the time it won at Cannes. Obviously it won't mean much until more people see it. Besides, has a truly awful film (well, 4.7 is indicative of an awful film...) ever snatched the biggest prize at Cannes? Ya, we'll see on this one.... |
