I feel the exact same way about Half Nelson. After watching it, I couldn't shake it.

Science of Sleep is a tough film to love, I'd admit to that.

This is a great week for my Dolce infection. The Queen, Running with Scissors, Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles, and Babel.

Oh, I've totally gotten the dolce in the past two weeks...

I've seen Shortbus (woo! - I'm worried I'm going to be the only one to *love it* but I expect everyone else to like it), The Queen (amazing) and Running with Scissors (eh). Next up is Babel. I'm very excited. Perhaps something else, if my theater gets any more indies (I was shocked to see Shortbus playing... we discussed it coming, but that doesn't mean things actually come - 2001, for instance, is still MIA).

I don't know how to feel about Running with Scissors. It's almost ungradable. I was certainly entertained and somewhat enlightened. But it's a fuckin mess.

In the bizarro world that is me, I enjoyed it a hell a lot more than Babel.

RwS was a tough movie... I don't blame you. It ranges from frustrating to endearing... across the span of twenty seconds. I want to hate it, love it, buy it, burn it... yikes... as a film, it really does range from great to horrible. Impossible to judge. So many emotions flying.

COMPLETELY.

I went from an F to an A back and forth throughout the film.

I settled with a C+. For the sheer sideshow attraction of it all, people need to see this film.

Zennier, I should add that Joseph Fiennes owned his role as Bookman. I didnt really realize it was him until the credits.

Yeah, it surprised me to see him in it, too. He was really left out of the advertisements... big surprise. He played a very interesting character. The casting as a whole was pretty fantastic (I'd nominate Jill Clayburgh for a supporting Oscar)... but the story sold them short. It's a remarkable story that didn't translate to film. I noticed Patrick Wilson (meh) is in it, but didn't spot him... did you notice who he played?

I liked Joseph Cross in the film. Outside of Paltrow, I think everyone did great work. Evan Rachel Wood stood out as well.

Yeah, according to imdb, Wilson is in it. I'll consult Christian. He notices these things.

I didn't care for Paltrow (normally a favorite of mine - boy, was she miscast) nor Cox. He had a few funny lines, but I found his character to be uneven and his acting just... didn't fit. What was it he called his special room? The "mastabatorium," I think? Heh.

I was going to put mastabatorium in my rank but I figured all of 2 people would get it.

At least we took something important home with us, . Damn, Benning was good, too. Can't leave her out. She reminds me so much of my demented mother. Her breakdown was wonderfully put to music. (<--- that so sounded like I was talking out of my ass.)

Next up is Shortbus, right? You're going to at least like it. I know you like Hedwig, and there is indeed a singing drag queen for you to award the Jaye Davidson Award for 2006. And trombones and orgies galore.

Shortbus could cum as early as Tuesday.

That was so gay I was instantly reminded of Tim.

Have you read the book? If not I'd definately recommend it as it is one of my favorite books. I think the problem with the movie is it wasn't able to catch the spirit of the book enough and so it ended up very uneven. And let me tell you...there is a lot that was left out. A whole lot.

Babel - ****
Shortbus - ***1/2

I loved them both. To me, Babel felt like everything Crash wanted to be and more. That final frame has haunted me for weeks now. Shortbus is an absolute joy. It's a funny, sweet and deeply sad film all at the same time - and it has probably the best soundtrack of the year.

God, I love you (even though Casino Royale was wonderful!).

I don't know if I said it, but that point about it being like the (brilliant) version of Crash fits perfectly. It was a fantastic movie, probably the best looking film of the year as well. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

Shortbus is pretty awesome too, bold and at the same time fun. I agree about the soundtrack, and I love the style of the film - the cinematography, those shots of the "city"... some of it was very abstract - in a good way.

I've got to see Shortbus.

Ugh.

I made plans to see Shortbus this week.

I can't wait to see thoughts on Shortbus... woo.

Great to see dolce's review of Volver, which I can't wait to see. I figured it would be Pedro-lite with a cleaner story (but nonetheless vibrant) judging from the tone of the trailers and reviews... which is great. The Flower of My Secret - although cynical, too - was very "clean" as far as an Almodovar film goes. I can't wait for it!

I still owe dolce some thoughts on a certain film. In time. She probably isn't holding her breath, but I can't blame her. :-(

It's been an endless journey to see Shortbus. Was supposed to see it two weeks ago, then sometime last week, now this week before I leave the US. I'm just happy it's still in release in Chicago.

Lucky you. It was only in Tampa for a week... traveling print. I was lucky enough to get it at my theater, so seeing it wasn't a problem.
