Post Re: 2023 critics awards thread (Las Vegas/Florida)
So far

Picture: Killers has the most but a lot of the other movies have 1 win, not a total runaway in critics awards plus it’s losing Directors, seems inevitable it will be passed by a Oppenheimer/Barbie/Holdovers/etc. in Best Picture in non critics awards phase.

Director: Nolan doing everything he needs to be easy winner one way or another

Actor: Murphy and Giamatti lead, probably good for Giamatti that he actually won some of these with feel good type of movie. Maestro not as friendly to critics awards so Cooper can come back.

Actress: Gladstone leads but Stone winning a few from her when Killers is doing so well in Picture is probably a positive sign that she can win. Mulligan like Cooper can’t be judged yet.

Supporting Actor: Gosling, Ruffalo and Downey pretty even, De Niro’s chances at winning may be slimming. Melton has a few wins but would have to settle for #5 spot.

Supporting Actress: Total blowout for Randolph

Boy and the Heron is strangely getting ignored outside of New York and LA I wonder if the lack of awareness is hurting it

Poor Things is getting the critics but I don't think its going to do that well at the box office once it goes wide and feel like the Barbenheimer train could push Gosling/RDJ over Ruffalo. His participation in She Hulk would have cost him worse last year.

I could see Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things both being inflated in critics awards so I wonder if it opens the door for a non Gladstone/Stone winner like Mulligan or Robbie.

I think Golden Globes are going to make a difference this year. The ratings will be better than expected with CBS and real big movies front and center with big press (pent up awards event since the strike hasn't had an event of that significance everyone will be front and center). Still think Robbie has a chance. She was the engine that could bringing in Greta and team and a Murphy / Robbie dual win is too tantalizing from a publicity perspective and think social media could really take over to push for those wins to relieve Barbenheimer. Barbie takes picture, Oppenheimer takes director wouldn't shock me either.

Someone on reddit analyzed his numbers and apparently Obama has about a 54% match rate with the best picture lineup and has mentioned the winner in 4/6 years (apparently he didn't love Green Book or Coda.) Good news for Oppy, Anatomy and Past Lives.
