Re: Fablemens, I think general audiences are pretty sick of these legacy filmmakers shitting on their Marvel movies whilst continuing to make the same oscar bait over and over again.

Oscar voters won't care about that. They basically gave Birdman best picture precisely for shitting on Marvel movies. So I think Spielberg will win direction, but hopefully lose picture to one of the two films that the GA, movie lovers and film snobs agreed on this year- EEAAO or Top Gun: Maverick. They're not my personal favorites, but both are solid 8/10s and since Turning Red and Weird have no chance I'll root for what's best for the movie industry.

63 metacritic score for Babylon. That should be the end for it, but getting poor reviews didn't stop Don't Look Up or Nightmare Alley last year.

Babylon may still be in the race but Margot Robbie seems like she's out. Reviews are brutal about her performance. They call her a movie-killer. I still maintain she's the female Jude Law: good but not great as an actor, too beautiful to be relatable. Barbie will be the last test of whether or not she can be headline a film. If that flops it's off to forever supporting actress land.

It's even 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, a platform that usually inflates a movie or TV programme's true critical sentiment.

Margot still has a chance to get 5th over people like Colman or Davis

Dare I say Everything Everywhere All at Once is winning everything, everywhere, all at once?

Yeah I'm feeling Everything Everywhere BP win at this point. It will connect with people emotionally.

I think EEAAO is winning Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actor and Original Screenplay

We should have all bet on Everything Everywhere a few weeks ago when it was at +600 odds. Now it's basically even with Fablemens at +175.

Critics aren’t the academy. Still, surprised a film from that long ago is still mustering up support.

It would have been really something if they had a more prominent "lead actor" role here too so EEAAO could have gone for the big 5 which is so rare. The fact that it can do Picture, Director, Actress, Screenplay, supporting actor, possibly supporting actress in a best case could give it 6/7 of those categories.

I don't believe a film has ever gone 7/7 only at best 5/5 (last done by Silence of the Lambs). 6/7 though would be pretty extraordinary.

EEAOO would be a great BP winner. Hopefully they nominate Hsu if they nominate Jamie Lee too...

Ummm wasn't RRR already confirmed not submitted and thus not eligible for the win?

It's already won like a dozen best foreign film awards so that would be quite unfortunate

I've seen RRR tossed around for a possible best picture nom. Weird that it wouldn't make the shortlist for foreign.

Wonder if the Angela Basset momentum could actually propel Wakanda Forever back into the BP lineup. They need at least one black movie in there, and neither Woman King or Till feel like locks to be the one. They could also just go full populist this year with Everything Everywhere, Top Gun, Avatar, Wakanda Forever, RRR and of course the new frontrunner - The Batman - all being nominated.

Woman King has a better chance than Black Panther, but Black Panther is ahead of Till

Post subject:  Re: 2023 Contenders

They're never going to have three sequels and two comic-book movies in the Best Picture lineup. If they're going to include a sequel, it will be Maverick. If they're going to include a comic-book movie, it will be The Batman. I really do not see a way Wakanda Forever gets it. It didn't do anything spectacular at the box office, it doesn't star Chadwick Boseman, it just hasn't had anywhere near the same impact as the first did, and the first was already nominated. Nominating the sequel won't do anything for the Academy. But The Woman King has a chance.

I think these will be the 10 picture nominees

Everything Everywhere All At Once
The Fabelmans
The Banshees of Inisherin
Avatar: The Way of Water
Top Gun Maverick
Elvis
Tar
The Woman King
Women Talking
Babylon

RIP Lisa Marie. Really heartbreaking.

A lot of people will be reading about the Presleys and think there's a serious chance here that Austin now will take best actor. It's a way to commemorate the family and celebrate their legacy and following the Golden Globes think best actor is completely up in the air.

Post subject:  Re: 2023 Contenders

With all the guilds out, my final predictions are

Banshees of Inishirin
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Elvis
Everything Everywhere All At Once
The Fabelmans
Tar
Top Gun: Maverick
The Whale
The Woman King
Women Talking

Picture - EEAAO
Director - Spielberg
Actor - Colin Farrell
Actress - Cate Blanchett
Supp Act - Key Huy Quan
Supp Actr - Angela Bassett
Orig Screenplay - EEAAO
Adapted - Women Talking
Editing - EEAAO
Cinematography - Top Gun
Score - Batman

I think voters will be so worried about not having a black that both Wakanda and Woman King will get in. The Whale will ride its support from actors. Avatar will be the big snub. The Menu and Glass Onion will be the movies that in five years people will say "How was that not nominated?"

Just realized the Oscars were in mid Mar not late Feb.

I understand the olden days of Oscar runs but feel people are so instantaneous everything now that the length from nominations to awards feels so much longer now.

Hope TGM can make one more re-release happen if it gets a lot of attention though. Never give up on $1.5B.

Yeah, it's stupid to hold an award show when people are already well into the new year and not wanting to think about the previous year anymore. People are in a nostalgic mood for the first few weeks of January, not March. It's also another reason the Oscars telecast isn't as popular as it used to be, and one that goes untalked about. Throughout the years there is a correlation between viewership and date held. Those held in February have better ratings than those held at the end of March. There are other factors, too, but it seems to be that when all other circumstances are equal, a February date wins the viewers.
