Forty-nine countries have submitted films to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Academy Award consideration in the Foreign Language Film Award category, Academy President Frank Pierson announced today.

The submissions for 2004 are:

There will be five nominees. :)

The only lock I see now is Spain's The Sea Within, and it's the favorite to win. I have high confidence in China's House of Flying Daggers because of its December release date, Yimou's profile, and the good reception it got at Toronto Festival.

Where is Maria Full of Grace? I thought Columbia submitted it. That would be my third choice.

For my fourth and fifth picks, I'd go with Mexico's Innocent Voices since it's getting great reviews, and Denmark's The Five Obstructions. If Maria Full of Grace wasn't submitted, then I'll choose France's one for the last entry.
