Well, I have not gone through your whole post, but....

Before Sunset is nowhere near comedy... it is defintely drama.
And second, Ray as musical? No, it's drama as well!

I see....

Drama:

Aviator
Closer
finding Neverland
Kinsey (this is iffy)
5th slot will go to some random movie (don't think Million Dollar Baby or Rwanda will get in here) maybe Ray or Passion

Musical/Comedy
Spanglish
Phantom of the Opera
Fahrnheit 9/11
Sideways
the last spot is just as well a bit random, but I finally will (for this one ONLY rod) give the edge to Eternal Sunshine

Movies with a lot of musical numbers, even if they're not quite musicals, often end up in the musical or comedy category (see Selena).

Well, you do have a point there....

But Ray was so much more about his actual life, while Selena was more on her musical career.
Then again, the theme of the movie was that music was Ray Charles' life... but they go beyond that to childhood traumas and his drug problems, and his affairs.... I don't know. It could flow either way. But I would defintely place it udner Drama!

The Passion and Fahrenheit are ineligible, if I remember correctly.

Best Picture - Drama
The Aviator
Closer
Finding Neverland
Kinsey
Million Dollar Baby

Alternates: Collateral, Hotel Hwanda

Comment: Reasonably confident about the lineup. Hollywood Foreign Press is unlikely to ignore Closer here. The only vulnerable one is Kinsey.

Best Picture - Comedy/Musical
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Phantom of the Opera
Ray
Sideways
Spanglish

Alternate: The Incredibles

Comment: Love to find a place for The Incredibles, but not sure which one to replace. Maybe Spanglish.

Best Director
Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby
Mark Forster, Finding Neverland
Mike Nichols, Closer
Michael Mann, Collateral
Martin Scorsese, The Aviator

Alternates: Joel Schumacher (The Phantom of the Opera), Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

Comment: A very competitive category. I think HFPA will absolutely dig The Phantom of the Opera, but Schumacher is probably the weakest link. Also I love Collateral and most of Michael Mann's works, so it has a personal wish involved here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role - Drama
Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda
Javier Bardem, Mar Adentro
Johnny Depp, Finding Neverland
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Aviator
Liam Neeson, Kinsey

Alternates: Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby), Tom Cruise (Collateral)

Comment: Another competitive category. Clint Eastwood can replace Don Cheadle, and Javier Bardem may be overlooked here as well, although he will do well with other critic groups.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role - Comedy/Musical
Gerard Butler, The Phantom of the Opera
Jim Carrey, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jamie Foxx, Ray
Kevin Spacey, Beyond the Sea
Paul Giamatti, Sideways

Alternate: Bill Murray (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou)

Comment: not much competition for this one. The top 6 is pretty much set.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role - Drama
Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby
Imelda Staunton, Vera Drake
Julia Roberts, Closer
Laura Dern, We Don’t Live Here Anymore
Uma Thurman, Kill Bill Vol 2

Alternates: Audrey Tautou (A Very Long Engagement), Nicole Kidman (Birth)

Comment: Hilary Swank won GG before, so I think Imelda Staunton has a good opportunity to win here.

Best Actress in a Leading Role - Comedy/Musical
Annette Bening, Being Julia
Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera
Kate Winslet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Lindsay Lohan, Mean Girls
Tea Leoni, Spanglish

Alternates: Tea Leoni (Spanglish), Claire Danes (Stage Beauty)

Comment: It will be between Annette Bening and Emmy Rossum.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Alan Alda, The Aviator
Clive Owen, Closer
Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby
Patrick Wilson, The Phantom of the Opera
Thomas Hayden Church, Sideways

Alternates: Peter Sarsgaard (Kinsey), Dunstin Hoffman (Meet the Focker)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Cate Blanchett, The Aviator
Laura Linney. Kinsey
Minnie Driver, The Phantom of the Opera
Natalie Portman, Closer
Virginia Madsen, Sideways

Alternates: Meryl Streep (The Manchurian Candidate), Kate Winslet (Finding Neverland)

Best Screenplay
The Aviator
Closer
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Sideways
Kinsey

Alternates: Million Dollar Baby, Hotel Rwanda

Best Original Score
The Aviator
Finding Neverland
The Incredibles
The Passion of the Christ
A Very Long Engagement

Alternates: Spanglish, Birth

Best Original Song
Old Habits Die Hard, Alfie
Million Voices, Hotel Rwanda
Knock Yourself Out, I Heart Huckabees
Learn To Be Lonely, The Phantom of the Opera
Believe, The Polar Express

Alternates: Shrek 2, Finding Neverland

Best Foreign-Language Film
House of Flying Daggers
The Motorcycle Diaries
The Passion of the Christ
The Sea Inside
A Very Long Engagement

Alternates: Maria Full of Grace, Bad Education
