Well deserved almost sweep for Everything Everywhere. This movie checked every box while being completely unlike the types of film that usually wins these awards. Good on A24 for keeping the hype up for over a year to get it over the finish line.

The only thing they got wrong was Jamie Lee tbh. But imo EE deserved it and more.

Great for Brendan, now lets green light new Mummy film and get him cast in DC.

Eww, no DC until they sort out their issues. I was thinking the Mummy sequel though is a must.

Also I'd be down for Encino Man 2 now that it has two Oscar winners. Can we get Pauly nominated?

I'm impressed with Darren Aronofsky's ability to get Oscar attention for his casts at such a high frequency of success. He's only directed 8 feature films and seems to be the guy for career comebacks and Oscar attention with 2/8 lead acting wins, and 4/8 movies getting acting nods.

-Requiem For A Dream - Ellen Burstyn - Oscar nomination 20 years after her last one.

-Black Swan - Natalie Portman - Win after first nod.

-The Wrestler - Mickey Rourke - Oscar nomination (was the favorite for much of the campaign) and comeback. Also a nod for Tomei. He lost to Sean Penn for Milk (his second).

-The Whale - Brendan Fraser - Oscar win for first nod and comeback 16 years after last well received movie Crash. Nod for Chau too.

The winners feel very Oscar-y. It screams of "this will show the world that #AsianHate was wrong". Not that it's a bad film. Far from it. It's great. But they still just won't award a popular blockbuster like Top Gun: Maverick. It had to be the popular indie. But yay for Jamie Lee Curtis.

I'm very pleased for Brendan Fraser, though. It's fucking excellent that George of the Jungle and Encino Man is now an Academy Award winner with pretty much just the one serious, dramatic performance to his name.

The Banshees had its night at the BAFTAs, so that's fair. I'm glad Elvis got shut out, and I'm pretty pleased "Naatu Naatu" got Best Original Song. Such a nice, catchy tune.

Oh, and very happy that The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse won. It's a delightful short.

Happy enough with EEAAO win and rewarding creativity. As seen by the other thread a lot of these winners are very good, though maybe not true classics in the long run like a NCFOM. I do think Yeoh over Blanchett was a bit of a reach but she got the Jean Dujardin treatment of riding the BP winner.

Gaga/Rihanna/Kravitz did well, as did Kidman's plastic surgeon.

Kimmel B-. He is no Billy Crystal in terms of classic multi time hosts.

Stay tuned for my upcoming article the top 40 Best Picture contenders of 2023! (maybe less than 40 if I can't think of that many)

Blanchetts movie sucked so much that no matter how good she was she didn’t deserve the Oscar

I didn't realize, but EEAAO won the most Oscars (7) in 14 years since Slumdog Millionaire got 8. Very impressive.

It's also the winningest best picture winner of all time in terms of acting awards (3). I feel like if they put Ke in for best actor he could have possibly won that one too as competitive as that field was he was just so likable he probably could have won best sound or art direction too if he wanted to do that as well :P . Would have been nice to have it become only the 4th film in history to get best actor/actress/screenplay/picture/director and oh how close we got to 4 acting wins for 1 movie.

Well someone else would have had to win supporting actor in that scenario and James Hong nomination chance never really took off

Yeah, more meant it if they had another major male supporting too.

Having seen the whale the other day i really dont understand how fraser won, it was a good performance and thats all, and as far as Curtis goes, i cant believe she was even nominated.

Just weak wins all around in the acting categories.
