Quote:
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is a 1997 American science fiction/action-comedy film and the first film of the Austin Powers series. It was directed by Jay Roach and written by Mike Myers who also stars in the title role. Myers also plays Dr. Evil, Austin Powers' arch-enemy. The film co-stars Elizabeth Hurley as Vanessa Kensington, Robert Wagner as Number Two, Seth Green as Scott Evil, and Michael York as Basil Exposition. There are cameos by Will Ferrell, Carrie Fisher, Tom Arnold, Rob Lowe, Christian Slater, Neil Mullarkey, and Burt Bacharach, and an uncredited cameo by MADtv star Michael McDonald, among many others.

The film is a parody of the James Bond films (particularly the earlier features in the franchise) as well as other 1960s spy films.

The film, which cost $16.5 million, opened on May 2, 1997, to positive critical reviews. It made a modest impact at the box office, grossing US$53 million in its North American release and about US$68 million worldwide. The film later became a hit and cult classic on the home video market and cable television, spawning two more commercially successful sequels.

Funny movie, but both sequels were better. I know this is the one that became a cult hit and while I can see why I happen to disagree. The characters and all are interesting and imaginative and the Bond allusions are at their best, but the humor just doesn't work too well here.

Absolutely HILARIOUS! Everytime Dr. Evil says he will kill Austin Powers in an easily escapable trap and even closes the door knowing Austin can escape gets me everytime... the part were the cop screams "NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!" before being hit by a bulldozer is also funny. Or the 'Lucky Charms' guy! HILARIOUS!

This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, probably Mike Myers best

A-

funny lines:

Dr. Evil: Let me tell you a little story about a man named Sh! Sh! even before you start. That was a pre-emptive "sh!" Now, I have a whole bag of "sh!" with your name on it.

Austin: That's Dr. Evil's cat!
Vanessa: How can you tell?
Austin: I never forget a pussy... cat.

Scott Evil: I was thinking I like animals. Maybe I'd be a vet.
Dr. Evil: An evil vet?
Scott Evil: No! Maybe like work in a petting zoo.
Dr. Evil: An evil petting zoo?
Scott Evil: You always do that!

I was one of the lucky ones to see all Austin Powers films in the movies. This is by far the best, one of the best spoofs/ Parodys of all time. Austin is a perfect anti-Bond character. His character is brilliant, its a mockup that people like Mich Jagger is considered so sexy by brits, but is truly hideous to look at. Dr. Evil, lets just say is one of the best villains of all time.

Scott "Why dont you just shoot them in the head?"

"No No No, I have a much better idea, Im going to place them in an easily escapable situation involving an overly elaborate and exotic death."

Scott, after Dr. Evil tells them to close tank
"arent you even going to watch?"

Dr. Evil
" No im not going to actually witness them dying, Im just going to assume it all went to plan, what?"

A+

Although I agree with everything else in your review, I strongly disagree with the above statement -- sexuality is about far more than looks!

I agree completely with you, but Powers hits that mark that even Kensington "In the 60s in Brittain, you could be a sex symbol and still have bad teeth. It didnt matter."

As unattractive that powers is, hes uber cool, in this film anyway, the others he has been given less screentime each time, which is a shame.

While this movie was brilliant conceptually, I think it failed to deliver. But still, pretty effing awesome. Although the other 2 were funnier, this one really is responsible for setting up everything that was great about the next 2.

I still think Myers should've gotten Oscar consideration sometime during the series. The fact that he can be Powers, Dr. Evil, and later Fat Bastard and Goldmember, and create such different characters and individuals out of them, to the point where on first look it would be impossible to differentiate between any of them, is brilliant. The entire movie is Myers interacting with himself, and he pulls it off far past fluently, he manages to create amazing chemistry with... himself. Hell, even if he was just Dr. Evil alone, I think that performance alone is among the best comedically ever.

This is the only one that holds up. Without the cheap SFX, the huge A-list cast, and the overly complicated stories, this one shines. Mike Myers and Vegas, baby. It's such a classic.

This was quite a unique and funny as hell movie for it's time and still holds up well on the occasional viewing.. I still enjoyed Spy Who Shagged Me a little more, but I'd give them both "A" and proves Mike Meyers is probably one of the best comic's out there.. I think I'm gonna make a spoof BOND movie and call it "GOLDENDICK" :shades:

Finally got the DVD. This was only my second time watching, and I barely remember it from the first time (although I've seen the sequels numerous times).

Very, very good movie. Lots of laughs. I think I still like the sequels more, but this is still quite enjoyable.

Grade: A-

I forgot how funny this one is. There's almost non-stop laughs throughout. I think a lot of people - myself included, before I rewatched this - think the second one is better because it's bigger and flashier and glossier, but this one is, pound-for-pound, purely more funny. Everything is spot-on.

It's sad seeing the downfall of Mike Myers. From Wayne's World and this (and even Shrek) to The Cat in the Hat and The Love Guru, it's been an embarassing ride.

He's essentially made 2 poor movies. That's not bad for any other actor except he rarely works in live-action movies these days. I'd stray from calling it a 'downfall.'
