American Fiction
Quote: American Fiction is a 2023 American comedy drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson (in his feature directorial debut). Based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, the film follows a frustrated Black novelist and professor who jokingly writes an outlandishly stereotypical "Black" book out of spite, only for the book to be published and receive widespread fame and acclaim. It stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown.
American Fiction premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2023, where it won the People's Choice Award. It was given a limited theatrical release by Orion Pictures on December 15, 2023, with an expansion on December 22, 2023.

Re: American Fiction
Thought this was good. Award worthy? ... not really. Don't really get Sterliing K Brown's nom, felt like he was barely in the movie.

Re: American Fiction
This was absolutely hilarious, funniest movie of 2023. The story was decent as well, though it didn’t build to some huge thing at the end like I thought it might.

Re: American Fiction
It was great. If it wasn't executed well could have been a disaster but feels like this is for Wright what Oppenheimer was for Murphy. Secondary character to lead and can anchor the movie.

Re: American Fiction
The scenes about his book are enjoyable but I found the family drama half of the movie about his alzheimer's mom, his love interest, housekeeper's romance, etc. to be pretty average. I think the point was to show that black people stories can be about these normal life events that don't have anything to do with being black, but the execution of that half of the movie just wasn't that interesting to me and overall slowed down the momentum.
