Quote:
The Color Purple is a 2023 American musical coming-of-age period drama film directed by Blitz Bazawule from a screenplay by Marcus Gardley, based on the stage musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It is the second film adaptation of the novel, following the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg and Quincy Jones return to produce this version, along with the stage musical's producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the latter of whom also starred in the 1985 film as Sofia. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and Fantasia Barrino in her film debut as Celie. Brooks and the latter reprise their roles from the productions of the stage musical.

The Color Purple premiered in London on November 20, 2023 was released in the United States on December 25, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Best musical since Chicago! great performances, sets - of course the story doesnt disappoint. Can't see how this doesn't sweep oscars.

This was good not great. I don’t think the story lends itself to being a musical. The songs don’t really advance plot or character. The time could’ve been used for more character development or better yet, just make the movie shorter. This one feels its length. But it’s mostly interesting and the production values are impressive. All the actors look like they’re having a good time.

I watched the original film last week... probably would rather liked this one more if I didn't lol

Don't think anything in this film was an improvement. That said the cast is good.
