Saw it a 3rd time. My conclusion is that Nolan is now involved in 2 of the top 5 male actor performances of all time.

Exactly.

Pearce is great in Momento. Eckhart's performance is so underrated in TDK too. Ledger is obviously iconic but he benefited from FLAWLESS writing.

A+ I could watch this over and over and never tire of them.

Hardy in TDKR is 2nd best to me having not seen Oppenheimer yet

I thought Murphy was too cold here TBH and spent the entire time thinking Leo DiCaprio would have brought some much needed humanity to this supposedly charismatic and witty womanizer.

Hmm, ledger 1 of 6 fantastic Joker interpretations, none of which I’d call the greatest of all time. It’s just a really great role any great actor or even a character actor can excel at, like Scrooge or hamlet.

Who knew Christopher Nolan would be the one to bring the wildest (?) sexual moment to American cinema since Sharon Stone uncrossed her legs thirty years ago? That scene where Kitty imagines Oppenheimer fucking Jean but sees them at the table in front of Strauss’ board with all the members sitting there was kinda jaw dropping.

Yeah Nolan recreated the test bomb, blah blah. Yeah this is one of the most thrilling movies so far this decade even though half of the movie is behind closed doors, blah blah. The adult R-rated drama is back! Now if we can convince the studios and other directors of this that’d be great.

Also, this pretty much needs to be seen in a premium format or higher. I saw it in LieMax and while it's very important visually, the sound is the absolute highlight. Anyone who says this is a mostly talky movie and can be seen in any format is nuts.

That would've been the worst casting choice in the history of cinema.

Utterly thrilling and profound when it focuses on the development atomic bomb and what it represents for humanity; interminable and overblown when it focuses on his "trial"---there simply are not enough stakes and gravitas to losing a security clearance, the film acts as if he is about to be executed and it ends up feeling like Nolan is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Gorgeous cinematography.

A+ for the first two thirds (and the very end scene), B- for the last third

I went to see this a second time and it's just as enthralling, even though some element of surprise isn't there anymore it's made up for noticing new details the second time around. Especially because the film is long the beginning had faded when I got to the end the first time, so right from the start it feels fresh again. Really love Hartnett in it, I didn't even care for him in the early 2000s, but he's picked some good roles the last few years and I like his renaissance. And back to the film, everything works about it for me, I already thought about it the first time, but the interogation and investigation stuff reminds me of JFK, it's sublime. It's hard to be perfect and Oppenheimer isn't, but it's as close as can be, and as they say in the film about Oppenheimer being a important person, this film about him, feels like that too. It should win a bunch of awards.

It's not bad. It's good. But I have mixed feelings on it. It's basically a Nolanized historical biopic, which isn't a bad thing per se but it's quite obvious to see his tactics at play. I wouldn't say it's a particularly interesting story, but it does have cinematic interest as the whole movie is basically one long sequence, and as that intensifies it's obviously gripping. It's just that it isn't intellectually stimulating. It takes three hours to get to the point that it sucks we created nuclear weapons, as if somehow we're meant to marvel at Nolan's use of 'chain reaction' having ... TWO MEANINGS. #mindblown #eyeroll

But in terms of its individual parts and elements, it is well articulated though the runtime is unnecessary. It doesn't do enough to warrant it. But I'd say Murphy does a pretty bloody good job, and if he were to be nominated for an Oscar I'd support him all the way. And Ben Safdie, who I thought was again fantastic. The guy can really act. Other than that - and I've heard some people claim Josh Hartnett should be in the conversation, lol - I didn't see anything notable in terms of acting. All just normal performances. Well, apart from the two women who were quite poor. I suppose Robert Downey Jr. was decent. It's a great role. I was actually pretty impressed with Gary Oldman in a small role as President Truman. There are just so many names in the cast. What an ensemble.

Hartnett and Krumfeld bring some needed positive energy. Neither are awards worth lol they're roles are much too small. Hartnett does nail his "drama" scene where as asks Oppenheimer "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" and Krum is sincere with his 2 "Eat something" bits. In a movie filled with people trying to get something out of the cog in a huge machine, they feel like real people.

Honestly thought Matt Damon wasn't great here, it feels very forced.

The last hour is much less boring in 70mm imax at Lincoln Center.

What an experience! I don't think I'll ever be able to watch this on a normal television now.

I guess I'll wait to see this on IMAX 70mm or similar 70mm.

I finally saw Oppenheimer (don't ask me why I saved it so long)

I thought it was a cool concept that Strauss and Oppenheimer were kind of like two nuclear countries destroying each other. I think that took it to another level than if they just made it about creating the bomb. It still feels too long though, I'm amazed he got to 3 hours while cutting 80% of the marriage scenes other movies would have had, one of his biggest affairs and not doing the speech. Cillian Murphy gives amazing performance and Nolan leans into his Nolan-ness in terms of the editing, time jumps, etc. I think I still like TDK and Inception more but it's another strong movie on his resume and above average Picture winner.
