Quote:
Species is a 1995 science fiction horror film directed by Roger Donaldson, and starring Natasha Henstridge, Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Forest Whitaker, Alfred Molina and Marg Helgenberger. It was given an R rating for sci-fi violence, strong sexuality, and some language.

This film produced one theatrical sequel in 1998, Species II, which had Henstridge, Madsen, and Helgenberger reprise their roles. It was followed by the direct-to-video Species III in 2004 and Species: The Awakening in 2007, which stands as a separate film, not as an official follow-up to the previous three.

The film is about a group of scientists who try to track down and trap a killer alien succubus before she successfully mates with a human male.

I sometimes seriously question how they manged to get such a decent budget and cast for this film. I mean on paper it reads like a porn movie, Scientists create alien/human hybrid, hybrid escapes, scientists dispatch team to catch the by now highly sexy alien, alien becomes a Nymphomaniac in an attempt to end the human race.

How the hell did they get this by I ask you?

Anyways the movie itself is a pretty passable piece of sci-fi silliness and I was surprised this was one of Natasha Henstridges first roles because while she won't win any awards she avoids the Estella Warren levels of crap acting normally accosiated with models.

Ben Kingsley once again proves he'll appear in any movie if you offer him 5 dollars or a night with a bunch of horny Romanian Gypsies, indeed im amazed there isn't an Oscar by-law demanding his award back for some of his awful career choices since Gandhi.

The rest of the gang is pretty high caliber as well, Whitaker, Madsen, Molina and Helgenburger are decent mid-shelf jobbers althou Whitaker's kooky psychic was definetly written up on a lazy writers day, while its hard to watch Molina being so patently weedy in this compared to his Doc Ock turn in Spiderman 2. Madsen growls his way thru the whole thing which is enough for me because he just drips cool by default but there was one issue with his character namely the fact that he was set up as the aliens ultimate sexy male. Now I like Madsen as an actor but those shots of him in a stringy white vest didn't scream hunk at any point, still they could have done worse and made Kingsley the hunk which would have scarred my eyes.

H.R.Gigers alien model works its magic at the end and althou its no Queen it serves its purpose adequately.

Summing up its no classic of the genre and the whole "its a porno dressed up in a big budget" angle is hard to ignore but you could do far worse. Just remember afterwards that if an insanely beautiful women wants to mate with you bypassing foreplay its likely because she plans to spread across the Earth and rip your spine out afterwards.

Badly acted, badly directed, badly made. At least Henstridge is hot.

This was on tv so I gave it another watch, and it's better than I remembered, a sci-fi classic in fact. Henstridge of course just oozes sexiness, but it's an excellent alien invasion plot in itself and the acting is pretty credible also. Young Michelle Williams does a good job and especially love Madsen in it, he could have had a better career I think. The vibe of the film is very 90's, which I like, some of the cgi looks a bit dated because of it, but a lot of Sil in alien form is practical and done well. The last tunnel sequence becomes a bit too action-y for its own good, but everything before that is just very engaging and well set up. Very cool film.
