Thought this was better than I thought it'd be. Excellent performances all around and was emotionally engaged for the whole runtime.

Sorry lol, I just thought that was particularly funny wording.

Outside of the acting, the film is just manipulative and not subtle enough. The characters are not very believable, even if they are somewhat interesting. Hong Chau is a standout as the nurse who gives in to all of Frasers bad habits.

Overall, a gripping watch but not something I'll probably watch again

Brendan and Hong Chau were spectacular in this. I almost could watch the two of them for the entire movie.

It definitely felt melodramatic in some parts. A minor plot hole too

Spoiler: show
If students make a flood of complaints, online teachers don't get the chance to have one last class. Understand they included it so he could reveal himself but none of those students were interesting so felt like kind of a distraction.

Still give it an A- purely for Hong and Brendan. Sadie isn't bad either.

Also contrary to Babylon which I also saw this week, the ending made me want to see more so it was nice and short relatively and packed a stronger punch.

I think he has this in the bag, but it is definitely a there will be blood of the performance carrying the movie. And I just love the Fraserssance

Post Re: The Whale
The mix of stage play and film felt a bit off here, it's like it wasn't quite committed enough to the former, but you still kind of get the sense of it through 5 speaking characters that get their monologue moments. The apartment is supposed to feel claustrophobic and dark but combined with the physical appearance of its lead, it just makes the movie seem hard to look at, and the whole seem like a low key movie. The reason the ending was so great to me was Aronofsky actually got to be the film director he is with the sweeping score and light coming through the door/heaven (?). Furthermore even though Fraser was great I wonder if it's a better movie if his role was less real and more stage-like, the flipside is Samantha Morton seems like she's not giving a good performance in a vacuum, but in some ways the big theatre like line readings was effective and led to one of Fraser's most affecting moments. I did think Hong Chau was excellent as a multi layered angry person, and Sadie Sink was also great and is a potential star. I think character wise it has some interesting stuff (is Charlie's idealism naive? Is he overvaluing the $100,000 to Ellie's life compared to being alive and being a good influence, or using it as an excuse to commit suicide and take the easy way out compared to the hard part of losing the weight+being present as a father, etc.) but I assume the source material is responsible for most of it. On the whole I wish it was a little better but I did think the ending was great and paid off some of the earlier movie.
