B/B-
I liked it more than I thought I would. Liked that how much it was more about characters rather than prison-break plotting (as a part of the already ridiculous movie plot). Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks were terrific and the film got lots of help from them. Not much of thrill but never failed to hold up my interest throughout. Many scenes were particularly well done (like a scene right after that out-of-place car scene).
Now I have to watch the original one.

Pretty much agree with JURiNG. Never THAT exciting, but it's pretty entertaining throughout without being absolutely ridiculous.

Re: The Next Three Days
Russell Crowe is in top form in The Next Three Days, an absorbing and well-crafted action/suspense film. His character is John, an even-tempered teacher and devoted husband and father whose life is changed forever when his wife, Lara (Elizabeth Banks), is arrested for a murder she swears she didn't commit. Upset, out of legal options, and forced to raise his son alone, John plots a complicated and dangerous prison escape.
It's no surprise Crowe, the star of L.A. Confidential, Gladiator, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, is convincing in the third-act action sequences, drawing on his (iconic) intense screen presence. Just as compelling, though, is his thoughtful portrait of a peaceful man torn asunder by sinister circumstances beyond his control. Watch his eyes, overflowing with concern and sorrow, in the scenes where he visits Banks' Lara in prison. Not since his Oscar-nominated turn in The Insider has Crowe explored his sensitive side with such poignant results. He "sells" his character's transformation from suburbanite to tentative thug with ease.
The supporting cast is also strong. The audience isn't shown Lara's prison experience, so Elizabeth Banks is not given as much to do as one might expect, but she still delivers a touching performance. This is proof the comedienne known for roles in The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Zack and Miri Make a Porno can also deliver in serious fare. Olivia Wilde has a brief, but interesting role as a single mother who shows interest in Crowe's character. One can almost imagine another film where John decides to move on and pursue a relationship with her, which is a testament to Wilde. Liam Neeson has an entertaining cameo as a career criminal who has escaped from prison several times. Don't believe the Neeson-heavy advertisements, though; he's in and out within five minutes.
Behind the camera, director Paul Haggis (Crash) emphasizes "how to" technical details--for example, using a YouTube video, John learns how to craft a "bump key." Haggis' playful fascination with step-by-step processes could alienate certain viewers (read A.O. Scott's review), but my eyes were glued to the screen. Haggis and D.P. Stéphane Fontaine (A Prophet) also use their Pittsburgh locations well. Each setting--John and Lara's home, the prison, the city streets--feels lived-in and detailed.
The Next Three Days has one curious scene--without giving it away, I'll say it involves Lara and a car door--but it's a minor, minor misstep in one of the year's finest and most exciting films. This is mainstream suspense done right.

Re: The Next Three Days
In The Next Three Days we spend our lengthy sentence running time grinding the edge of ridiculousness. Sometimes it pops an amazing 1080° intensity... other times it slides into languid melodrama. Thank gawd for the great actors! For one thing, the world needs to see more of Elizabeth Banks - - she is jawdropping in her mature talent and beauty. Too bad she didn't have even more to do in this film, but I can always watch Slither again if I want a refresher on just how awesome she is. Russell Crowe? Barely needs comment. He's one of the most reliable actors going - - always superb. And the solid supporting cast ranged from Babylon A.D.'s RZA to F/X's Brian Dennehy... But what about that screenplay? Way too brooding at times, the whole thing coulda been tightened up by 20 minutes for it's own good. Still, I loved the detail in the whole "plan" and it's execution, and I really wouldn't want to give up the two or three bizarro side plots that careen off in unexpected directions before rejoining the main ring in this stoic circus. I won't be needing to see The Next Three Days again anytime soon, but wouldn't want to have missed it either. 4 out of 5.

I thought it was damn good. The last half hour was riveting.

Re: The Next Three Days
The only scene I hated was when she pulls her jumping-out-of-the-car shit. What a bitch.

Re: The Next Three Days
If I was Crowe I would've ditched Banks and hooked up with Wilde as soon as she showed interest.

The problem with The Next Three Days is that the movie is basically the last forty minutes. There is all this planning that goes into the escape and then right when Crowe starts, the cops already have him figured out. The chase just becomes boring, there are no real fast turns and it just plays out blandly. The acting is subpar is well and is a complete reversal of the otherwise well-made Crash, also from director Paul Haggis. *

Re: The Next Three Days
This is so much better than Crash. Haggis should stick to meat n' potatoes popcorn films rather than the heavy-handed "prestige" fare.

Re: The Next Three Days
This is a solid suspense film that kind of came out of nowhere. Crowe is just excellent. It's a shame there's nobody filling his void these days.
