This movie is a mess. It has some absolutely breathtaking sequences - the scene with the fire at the beginning is incredible and the young actress playing Norma and Julianne Nicholson are amazing - but this feels a bit more like an art project than an actual narrative film. It's also puninshingly long and pretentious, and repeats some of the same beats over and over again. It left me feeling very cold. Ana de Armas looks just like Marilyn Monroe and gives it her all here but the character isn't meaty enough to leave much of an impression. C

Post Re: Blonde
This was hell for me. It's such a tedious film that isn't at all a celebration of Marilyn as it should be. I'm not even sure the film likes her. It is so depressing, and it's close to three hours of it. Andrew Dominik clearly believes that every single frame he captures is gold, and some of it is, but all the stuff about her mother and father and abuse is all so unneeded. The film doesn't focus on her rise to fame, fame itself, the pitfalls of it, her roles/contract negotiations, her beauty or the extravagance of fame, or even her legacy against her peers. None of that. Its sole aim is to show you how much Marilyn was abused, how troubled she was, and how much of a slut she was. Scenes of her career are used almost as picture pages between chapters. It has no interest in it. It would much rather pay attention to Marilyn giving the president a blowjob, or getting raped, or her never-ending abortions (and let's not forget the inner vaginal shot just to be edgy!). So much of this film is uncalled for, but it doesn't even make it a perverse or dark experience. Just a boring one.

Though, Ana de Armas does do well. There are so many shots throughout where I believed it was Marilyn Monroe. The lighting and cinematography are so crisp and perfect that at times, when she's in profile or is looking down, my mind was unequivocally convinced it was her and not an actress pretending to be her. The film also does well with regards to iconic Marilyn shots, poses, costumes, etc. Though I was a tad disappointed it left out my favourite ones of her on the beach in a white bathing suit. While Ana is commendable, because she's in such an awful film I sort of hope she isn't lauded with awards. The film is way too artsy, constantly switching from colour to black-and-white for no discernable reason. I couldn't even bathe in the atmospheric or melancholic dreaminess of it all because it ultimately isn't interested in simultaneously engaging people's minds.

Above all of this, I just do not believe much of what happened in the film. Whether it was true or not, I don't want my image of Marilyn smeared by this. Impregnated by JFK and then forcibly aborted? Yeah, nah. Marilyn Monroe deserved better than this. Perhaps the Elvis movie treatment, not this schlock.

So bad, everything about it, Andrew Dominik is a hack, De Armas is not good in it either, mostly due to a bad an unhinged script, but still ridiculous she's got nominated for this. Only Brody I could say is fine, but this is terrible already within minutes and the length of this just makes it worse. I could not say what story it wants to tell, I feel I learned nothing about Monroe and it's just all over the place, doesn't work, just bad .
