I really liked this though of the recent Disney titles it felt super slight in terms of plot - I was actually surprised at how contained it all was. But it has heart and the visuals are gorgeous, and I thought the songs were high points. B+

What Corpse said it's spot on. It felt somehow disjointed between acts but still very engaging. The songs are really good but I didn't enjoy them during the movie, they are very catchy and can easily listen on repeat.

B+

I bet the people behind this movie are kicking themselves that they didn’t submit We Don’t Talk About Bruno for best song now that it is a chart topper. They played it safe and are now are paying the price

It's moronic to think that they didn't submit Bruno for nominations.

It's also pretty moronic that they even have to choose. Why aren't all songs just automatically eligible?

They didn’t win in 2007 with multiple Enchanted songs or 2009 with multiple Princess and the Frog songs so it makes sense they only wanted to submit one song. Did they really think the Spanish song not sung by the characters would be most popular though?

On paper it is the safe bet as it is the more serious song. It has the bow tie, but Bruno just happened to resonate with people more and turned out to be the smash hit song of the movie.

They did something a little different plot wise in this one with no villain and mostly geographically restrained, while feeling a little slight I think it works pretty well, but the songs are really the key. I had heard so much about Bruno that I was just a little disappointed when I heard it, although it's growing on me, but Surface Pressure really was a showstopper for me and I didn't expect the strong girl to get a number. I think I prefer some of the other Disney animation was but overall solid.

This has got to be Disney's most zeitgeisty hit since Frozen. In non pandemic times I think it could've grossed 300m domestic.

This is easily Disney’s biggest hit since Frozen, and yes it is sad it came out at the tail end of the pandemic. Now we will never know how much it would have grossed in a less constrictive environment

The Family Madrigal is pretty funny on rewatch with Mirabel trying to avoid talking about her own powers and the kids

The I Want thing felt a little forced in this and Moana to me, although the one in the latter seems popular.
