A solid period, crime drama that is very much elevated by the great, natural chemistry between Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as well as the solid direction from Thomas Bezucha. I really enjoyed the supporting cast in this too, especially Lesley Manville and Jeffrey Donovan who are great as the villains along with the other members of their scary, sadistic family. Their scenes were the most tense IMO would have liked to see even more screentime from them.

This was great thanks to Costner and Lane's chemistry and great direction from Bezucha who never lets go of the tension. Lesley Manville is brilliant as a sadist, menacing grandmother and the rest of the supporting cast was solid too. The dinner table scene, hotel scene were great but I felt the first third was rushed. The finale also delivers but those two scenes alone make this movie a must watch.

I thought it was great. Surpassed my expectations. Costner and Lane were really good. The villains made my blood boil. The dinner scene was so uncomfortable and intense. After this I guess tense dinner scenes are a staple in Bezucha's films. While a completely different kind of movie he also has one in The Family Stone.

Anyway, this was a nice old-fashioned adult thriller. We don't get enough of them.

8/10 (B+)
