That was an amazingly filmed scene, but on the level of any logic it was downright retarded.

Like most have already said it's no Casino Royale or Skyfall, but overall I still enjoyed it. The first hour was quite solid and as ridiculous as it was I really liked the opening scene, especially the continuous tracking shot at the beginning. It's too bad the whole opening wasn't that way because it would've been pretty awesome and easily the most memorable sequence in the movie. Outside of that bit and the train fight the action scenes here were kind of lackluster and it's too bad the movie ends on such a whimper instead of high note like the last three films. A lot of it also has to do with just how poorly utilized Waltz is. It's crazy how small his role actually is and even the BIG reveal towards the end falls flat. I wouldn't say the performance itself is bad just very bland, but maybe this is a sign that Waltz's villain shtick is indeed getting old. Oh well atleast he wasn't as poorly used as Monica Bellucci who definitely deserved better as she's only in two throwaway scenes. Also, the guy who played C was horrible and that whole last minute takeover plot at the end was so stupid.

Meh. Everything is less than Skyfall. The movie isn't terrible, but it is quite boring sometimes. Could have easily cut 20 minutes off.

Everyone in my audience as like "Is he retarded?".

Then the audience was just as retarded as you were. Or you're just as good at judging audiences like you are today's youth. Watch the scene again. The helicopter pilot FIRES A FLARE GUN at him. Then he punches at Bond. Why wouldn't Bond try to take over the helicopter, which the pilot might try to crash into the huge crowd of people?

If you have any question about the scene, it shouldn't be "Why does Bond attack the helicopter pilot mid-air?". It should be, why does the helicopter pilot fire a flare gun at Bond INSIDE the helicopter? Oh, and when that happens, why doesn't the flare rip a hole into the helicopter causing a crash onto the hundreds of people below?

Post Re: Spectre
Just realized I didn't write a review. It's a lot of fun. My two biggest gripes though are Madeline's "I love you" isn't earned (and I believe she becomes the first Bond girl to ever flat out say that to Bond besides Tracy in OHMSS), and the movie ends on a bit of a whimper. If you're going to watch Bond go off happily-ever-after (and dropping most of the references in the leaked script to On Her Majesty's Secret Service in the final cut...which I'm glad about by the way), then you have to have some sort of tease with Blofeld at the end. Getting arrested isn't good enough. You already have the longest Bond running time under your belt, what's another minute or two scene going to hurt? Not unless you plan to do what DAF never did and kill her off in the opening and then make the rest of the film about revenge...AGAIN. Or do what most Bond films do and pretend she never existed.

So yeah, as I said, I did have fun. The action scenes are entertaining, and Blofeld's reveal, for a Bond nerd like myself, was pretty good (I'm so glad we got the cat). Is it a little lacking compared to Skyfall? Yes. But just as we've seen with the box-office, Skyfall is the exception. Based on the numbers, you'll see a Bond film that good every ten to fifteen years. We were just fortunate that Casino Royale and Skyfall were released in the same actor's run.

**** (A-)

It's flawed yes but I loved it. Perhaps the lowered expectations helped but I'd rank it as my second fave of the Craig Bond films after Casino.

Expanding on what I didn't like-

1. Deakins was badly missed. The movie was shot well but there wasn't anything near as poweful as the best shots in Skyfall

2. Waltz and Batista were wasted.

3. The action scenes didn't feel organic. It was just like "it's been ten minutes without fighting, heeeeere's Batista". Every one was like the worst part of the Fast 7 sequences.

4. Lea is super hot but I didn't buy her falling in love with Bond. I think the scene where she leaves would have actually been a great place to end the movie. We know Bond will save the day, but it should be a cost beyond this year's model being kidnapped.

5. The song is bad.

It is still an entertaining movie despite all this. Just like Quantum, but with a better director and a reasonably steady camera.

I had an exhausting day, so felt the moments sleepiness through the film as well. Despite that it didn't feel like a 2.5hr film to me. It simply wasn't very epic to make it feel like that, and there was still plenty of stuff happening for me to also keep it interesting. Craig is a good bond for me, he set such a marvelous tone for me with Casino Royale, and that just doesn't go away, although the film after that haven't found the right mix of things to make it as great.

The opening sequence of Spectre is very good, in a same way as I thought the Die Another Day one is. And the rest of the film feels similar to Brosnan's 4th installment as well. Spectre definitely has the better villain, but the way it used him, didn't have much taste. In one way they wanted to modernize the thing, and on the other hand they wanted to stay oh so true to the original. It all felt too forced.

I found the score rather annoying as well. Felix and M's roles are ace, although the take-over plot as earlier mentioned, didn't feel very genuine for me either. Taking everything into account Lea Seydoux is probably the best part of the film, stunning in looks and acting. Further the film has a lot of nice sequences, the train ride, the car chase, everything with Bautista really, the Seydoux rescue. These made the film enjoyable, as well as some good directing all around.

I do like this Bond, it's better than Quantum, and can be best summed up as a stylish mess I think. This did make me appreciate Skyfall more, which I wasn't a fan of in the first place actually. I still love Bond, it has always had a nostalgic feel to it, and Spectre fits in pretty well somewhere in the middle.

B-

Last 10 Bonds in order of best to worst:
1. Casino Royale
2. Golden Eye
3. The Living Daylights
4. The World is Not Enough
5. Tomorrow Never Dies
6. Skyfall
7. Spectre
8. Die Another Day
9. License to Kill
10. Quantum of Solace

This did make me appreciate Rogue Nation a bit more. They're pretty similar in story, with a lot of the same pacing issues, but MI5's action sequences blew these out of the water.

Spectre

The quality that Mendes brought to Bond in Skyfall continues here in Spectre. This is an enthralling but grounded, beautifully captured, and deeply personal Bond film. In parts, it is Roger Moore-level Bond, and in others it is a totally new incarnation brought about by Craig's stoic and masculine portrayal and by Mendes' stylistic leanness. As with Skyfall, all the Bond elements are there; the licence to kill, the damsels in distress, the Walther PPK, the DB5, the gadgets, the henchman, and the master villain - but it is disciplined. It's there, but not there. Mendes has brought Bond a long way in the space of 3 years. The flamboyance and wink-wink playboy nature of the Brosnan era is well and truly gone. Swapped for a gritty, lone assassin with a heart.

Dave Bautista, reminiscent of Richard Kiel's Jaws, only speaks one word in the entire film, but it is such a commanding performance. A true Bond henchman. And then Waltz as Blofeld, in a role he was born to play. In the shadows for three outings, only to surface as Bond yet again falls in love (and yet again to a beautiful Français femme fatale, mimicking Vesper Lynd - she even has the same sultry pout). The older Bond girl this time around is Monica Bellucci in a small but no less impactful role. At the age of 50, Bellucci adds erotic class to the film. And then Daniel Craig; he's the fucking man. The best Bond ever. Craig's Bond is a real man's man, no holds barred, ruthless and rogue agent.

Spectre opens to a fantastic 5+ minute tracking shot. It is scenes like this, and the beauty of the Tangier desert explosion, and the intensity of the cross-country train bout, and the edge-of-your-seat excitement of the MI6 headquarter demolition, that urge me to give a standing ovation to the Bond franchise, but more precisely to Sam Mendes and his team. Beautiful job with the set pieces.

The 00 division being, let's say, disavowed, is covering well-trodden spy ground of recent years, and Bond's choice between saving himself or his girl is evocative of The Joker's toying-with-the-hero antics in The Dark Knight. But Mendes does not linger on these elements. He introduces them and within a flash they are gone, and the beating heart of Bond, the overriding narrative and urgency is back again - find and kill Blofeld.

My conclusion: Spectre is my favourite film of the year. As with Skyfall it made me proud to be British. A spy adventure that introduces a new colour palette with each exotic location, and provides welcomed nostalgic elements, riveting action sequences, superb cinematography, a greatly underplayed yet legendary Bond villain, and an interesting, layer-adding script.

Oh, and Sam Smith's theme song "Writing's on the Wall", while forgettable in isolation, is very Bond-ish and theatrical when attached to the opening titles. It harks back to the 80s and 90s Bond. Loved it.

Wow. Glad you saw it. Surprised you loved it. It no doubt has a goodness to it, but falls flat in comparison to many other films this year. You previously loved films that I find quite flawed, TAM 2, Godzilla, then again with the furious series it's the other way around. I still can't predict how you're going to feel about about a film.

I liked how Q was given some time in the field. Much like how Benji was in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. But it was much less blatant. More classy. Less brash. Less "American". ;)

This is the first Craig film that has no real sense of the "anti-Bond" that Casino Royale established. In a way, Craig's quadrilogy slowly morphs from a spy film to a Bond film. The film to me felt as close to "classic" Bond as any of the other Craig films. CR is anti bond, QoS is a mix but a bad one, Skyfall is a mix but a good one, and Spectre is completely Bond.

It's perfectly fine and better than QoS but it's far from CR or Skyfall. It just goes to show that the truly classical Bond just doesn't work as well in this modern world (ironic given the film tried to make the opposite statement.

And because of this, I think it should be the last Craig bond. It's sort of a perfect ending imo as it finally accepts that Bond is Bond, for better or for worse.

Sums it up pretty well.

Magnus' post. Yup.

Although I really enjoyed this movie, I think it would have been getting more enthusiastic praise if it wasn't following up Skyfall. In terms of film making, this is a beautiful and entertaining movie with a couple screenplay problems. Mainly the romance between Frenchie and Bond did not click for me, and the villainous assertion of "I was responsible for ALL the previous baddies!" felt a little weak. BUT a lot of these complaints fell by the wayside because I felt like I was watching a classic Bond film, and that shit flies free in Bond logic. It's just that there's a slight disconnect between the classical Bond fantasy world and the more grounded realism of modern movies.

One note: I really wish there had been a skiing action scene. Another note: Daniel Craig is impeccable, this might be my favorite Bond performance of his. Every stance, glance, saunter, and shot is just down-right cocky sexy in just the right way. Although, really, fucking Monica Bellucci right after killing her husband?

Overall, I very much enjoyed it. A- straight out the theater, probable downgrade to B+ once I clean up the mess in my pants.

What is it with people and their ever lowering standards?

This was dead from start to finish.

"I love you" mutters Lea Seydoux after two days. Is this what it has come to? Who wrote this drivel?

Waltz should be ashamed of his performance and his dialogue. Not that Bond has had a track record of being any good, but this was deplorable. Daddy loved you more, so I killed him...and became the leader of a multinational organised crime outfit that was taunting- shut the fuck up.
