Go to hell, Jonathan Demme, and when you get there, tell Pauline Kael I said hello.
This was unbearable.

Re: Something Wild (1986)
Mixed feelings, I s'pose.
For one, I'm jealous of people who saw this opening night, for whom it was just another movie to see. Because I bet the sudden switch from madcap romantic comedy to menacing, violent thriller was very cool. But this was spoiled by years of hearing, "It gets dark when Ray Liotta shows up!"
I loved Liotta and Jeff Daniels' performances, but Melanie Griffith...I'm just not a fan. She's more tolerable here than, say, in Paradise with Don Johnson, but the voice is still incredibly irritating. I can never invest in her characters. It's always just, "I'm watching Melanie Griffith trying very hard to act." Glad her career fizzled.
A few of Demme's "It's the '80s, and I'm so hip and keyed into the scene" touches were grating. I was cringing through the end credits, for example, where the waitress (Sister Carol) breaks into a reggae-infused cover of "Wild Thing."
