Shakespeare in Love

Quote:
Shakespeare in Love is a 1998 British-American romantic comedy film directed by John Madden and written by Marc Norman and playwright Tom Stoppard.

The film portrays playwright William Shakespeare's involvement in a love affair at the time that he was writing the play Romeo and Juliet. The story is fiction, though several of the characters are based on real people. In addition, many of the characters, lines, and plot devices are references to Shakespeare's plays.

Shakespeare in Love won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (for Gwyneth Paltrow), and Best Supporting Actress (for Judi Dench).

Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth would later star together in The King's Speech, for which Firth would win Best Actor. Rush would again co-star with Joseph Fiennes in Elizabeth, a film which would also get nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress.

Fantastic. While some might dissagree I thought Paltrow was excellent, so was the rest of the cast.

Decent movie. Should not have been nominated for best picture let alone win it. The academy really cheapened the process.

I completely agree. I also thought Gwyneth Paltrow was good, though I would have prefered Cate Blanchett winning for Elizabeth. Paltrow was Oscar-worthy, IMHO.

I was going to mention that also. Blanchett deserved the Oscar, but I'm not upset Paltrow won because she was really good in it.

A good film.Funny and romantic, but it did not deserve the oscars it got.I dont know why paltrow won the oscar for best acress when Blanchett gave without a doubt the best performance of the year. And i still cant believe the academy gave it the best picture oscar over SPR,truly the worst oscar moment.

It has become hip to hate this movie after it "stole" the Oscar from Saving Private Ryan, but look at it again. It is a wonderful movie with great performances (yes, even Affleck) and a lovely and very original story. (B+)

The movie is pretty decent with good performances all-around. However, it was the worst Best Picture nomineee in its year and Cate Blanchett deserved the Oscar more, by far.

A wonderful movie. Although it clearly didn't deserve to win Best Picture, that still doesn't take away from the merits of it. A

Sharply written and well-acted - even by Ben Affleck! - but I've never liked Paltrow, and this didn't change things.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I'm one of the few who was excited by this movie BP win and will defend it.

Another movie I loved where the story revolves around the creation of a play, Finding Neverland, though that is not as entertaining as Shakespeare In Love.

Solid A.

Add my name to the Shakespeare in Love fan club - - one of the rare times Oscar got it right - - SIL is a delightful story all the way through, while Saving Private Ryan only had that great first half hour followed by two hours of meandering boredom.

Post Re: Shakespeare in Love
A likeable and warm romantic drama (dramedy?). Despite his less than huge profile and not winning Best Director, John Madden impresses me. The montages mixing visuals, Shakespeare lines and music during the love scenes are beautiful.

No doubt Gwyenth helps takes the film to another level. She shows a great ability to be both reserved and energetic with youth in her eyes. Love her as "Kent" too. Crushed it. Supporting cast is fun too. Dench’s part didn’t seem too small to get the Oscar.

If I have two criticisms, one is the plot outside of the love story is a bit weary, sort of just there. Second is Joseph Fiennes who feels surface heavy and playing a role to me, rather than Big Willie Style’s vulnerability and humanity coming out. Honestly felt like more of a pirate than an artistic poet. Reminded me of Hook on Once Upon A Time.

A good film that I like more than the overrated Saving Private Ryan. With the other competition being none too strong, I’m fine with this Best Picture win.

Post Re: Shakespeare in Love
Much like Green Book, The King's Speech, Crash, etc... this movie is amusing enough, but impossible to seperate from its random best picture win. Would anyone still care about SiL if Private Ryan had just steamrolled through award season?

A hot take though - SPR didn't deserve BP either. Big Lebowski did.

I'll give Shakespeare In Love a 6/10.
