Quote:
Cape Fear is a 1991 thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese and a remake of the 1962 film of the same name. It stars Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis and features cameos from Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam, who all appeared in the 1962 original. The film tells the story of a convicted rapist who seeks vengeance against a former public defender whom he blames for his 14-year imprisonment due to purposefully faulty defense tactics used during his trial.

The film received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor (De Niro) and Best Supporting Actress (Lewis).

The third act (the business with the boat) kinda sucks. But the first two-thirds is perfect mainstream genre filmmaking. I wish Marty would let his guard down and just do straight, artless potboilers every now and then, since no one does it better. Maybe Shutter Island?

I agree with the above statement, except I don't hate the third act, i just don't like it as much as the first 2/3s.

*1/2 / ***** (D-)

An utter misfire from everyone involved. Over the top in every possible aspect (acting, directing, script). I'm baffled why anyone would think DeNiro and Lewis were worthy of even nominations. It's quite painful watching them overact in every single scene. Easily the worst Scorsese movie I've seen.

Im not a fan either. It's really kind of a mess/ homage. The only thing I can really love about this is that the absolute best Simpsons' episode of all time was because of this movie.

I would have loved to see the original version when Spielberg was gonna direct Ford in the Nolte role.

Oh God that episode is one for the ages for sure.

FBI Agent: "Hello, Mr. Thompson..."

Homer: "... I think he's talking to you."

Somehow I had never seen this movie and I'm very happy to have changed that. This is an all-time thriller with probably the best I've ever seen De Niro. I will never look at him the same.

I'm a big Scorsese fan but ashamed to say I haven't seen this. Will have to change that.

It is hard to say this is Scorsese's best film, but it's damn close. De Niro makes the film. I'm glad Harrison Ford didn't get his way - he wanted to play Cady with De Niro being Nolte's character!
