Mission: Impossible
Hmm, I remembered it differently. It's more of an espionage thriller than the rest of the franchise. It's very good, and very well executed. It probably needed more action, though. But Emmanuelle Beart is fucking stunning. These films are sort of the like the modern day Bond movies; hot chicks, cool action, clear villain, clear hero, gadgets, and cool vehicles. All of the sequels are probably better than this one, though.

Re: Mission: Impossible
I'd never seen any of these movies so I watched this one. Good action, but The plot didn't grab me. Also, the film feels spoofy at points after Kingsman, Spy and Get Smart made fun of this type of movie. I really didn't understand what was going on, and Ethan Hunt is a underdeveloped character. But I liked it enough to check out the sequel which I'm currently halfway through. C+

Re: Mission: Impossible
I would say the only thing that doesn’t hold up is the helicopter/train chase at the end. It doesn’t look awful when they’re outside of the tunnel, but once they get in? Oof. And what exactly was Ethan’s plan with the gum? Blow up the helicopter and let gravity take over? I’m not sure if the explosion would’ve propelled him forward like it did or if it just would’ve incinerated him.
Aside from that though, this is a damn good movie and much better than I remember it being, especially considering the script was apparently reworked again and again as they went along. Maybe I wouldn’t think it was so good if I was a fan of the TV show, but it probably helps that I’ve never seen an episode.

Re: Mission: Impossible
I started to rewatch MI series and this movie does not disappoint. Its a great espionage thriller that should have had a bit more action sprinkled. The first third is REALLY great, the second third gets the infamous stealing scene, the third act is where it goes down even when the mystery is solved neatly. The helicopter scene while done really well doesn't hold as well visually now.

Re: Mission: Impossible
I've been intending to see all the MI's again and started with this one, always loved it and still do. Just love everything about it, from the cast, great crew at beginning of the film, the spy mystery plot the soundtrack and the cinematography. The film is obviously helped too by Cruise as the lead, he just delivers an extra quality to the film, and Voight was so well cast too. De Palma aces this film, I love the tense action scenes and it's one of my all time favs no doubt. So glad this turned into a franchise and my grade earlier in the thread should be more like a bona fide A.
