Post Renaissance weekend thread
Renaissance - 5m

Seems good. Prolly very frontloaded but as long as it goes above $20m for the weekend that's fine.

RENAISSANCE $5,060,000
Godzilla Minus One $2,100,000
The Hunger Games $1,699,994 -8%
Napoleon $1,100,000 -16%
Wish $569,636 -4%
Trolls Band Together $516,670 -2%
Thanksgiving $338,956 -12%
Saltburn $308,574 -22%
The Marvels $299,531 -11%
Silent Night $250,000

Sad to see Silent Night essentially flop. John Woo late 90s / early 00s had Broken Arrow, Face Off, MI2, Windtalkers, and Paycheck over just a 6 year period.

The Godzilla series has so many interesting good / bad box office stories. Excited to see how big this one gets. It's getting raves so could do really well.

Solid but expected for Beyonce. Let's see how it holds over the weekend.

Great hold for HG. Really feeling it can pull an under 50% drop.

The Godzilla number is for Wednesday and Thursday shows. Will be interesting to see how it plays out over the weekend.

Go Hunger Games. Very good if it drops less than 50%

20 mil for Beyonce would be great.... until you compare it with Eras 93 mil opening. Taylor is the true Queen.

Good for the top 3. The theater seemed pretty busy tonight with lots of girls there for Beyonce and Hunger Games. Not so many in Napoleon with me. Hard to blame them. Movie wasn't much. Just ok.

Napoleon's Friday drop from DHD is bad but it honestly deserves it. It was really a wasted opportunity and clearly people showed up to see it OW so there was potential. If it was quality, probably could have played across the Christmas holidays and pushed that into an Oscar run. A potential $150M+ movie is looking like it will do half of that.

Great post Thanksgiving weekend. Two double digits openers (both from non major distributors), and an amazing hold for Hunger Games. It would hit 170m+ if it just followed Catching Fire’s legs from here.

Seems disappointing for the Holdovers to be dropping like the other movies but I guess it was a good fit for Thanksgiving weekend.

Wish is so embarrassing, it’s going to crawl to 50 mil like how the Marvels is crawling to 80. Another Disney movie where it just seems like the floor should have been higher. I mean if Wish made 90m it still would’ve been pretty lame.

It’s basically impossible for a movie to drop less than 45% over post Thanksgiving so Holdovers is doing as well as possible

Saltburn had the best hold in the top 10. A 16% drop for it is sensational. Especially when you have something like The Holdovers dropping 59%. I hope it can have a solid hold next weekend too.

I think if the Eras tour didn't go to theaters yet Renaissance # would like waaay better. As is its decent. Idk who else could do big #s with a concert #.

The #s are small but nice to see Saltburn's drop. Yesterday was its 3rd biggest day of its run. Its very buzzy on tiktok but I guess younger people can't buy tickets to it lol

Much like Beyonce's music and personality, fine but a little bland opening for Renaissance.

I'm planning to do one more viewing on Tuesday. My local theater still has 3 showings a day, but the one I'm going to is already down to one showing. I decided to see how full it was and it's already quite full. I was surprised. All of the good centered seats are taken. I wish I would have gotten tickets sooner. I'm curious how many theaters it loses next weekend. I would expect a lot since the heavily reduced showtimes at most theaters are the kiss of death. But with only one wide release next weekend, maybe it won't be too terribly bad. The theaters where it's performing well with one showtime could maybe keep it around for that or add a couple. I mean, what else are they going to show?

I think the great hold this weekend might be because it's been blowing up on TikTok in the past week. I'd probably bet on it.

Maybe they can talk a parent into taking them. That would be so awkward. TikTok still reaches users over 17. There have been a lot of college aged kids when I've gone.

I had been comparing it to Bones and All on The Numbers. Both opened in limited release the weekend before Thanksgiving and went wide Thanksgiving week. Both are MGM. Both appeal to young adults. Bones starred heartthrob Timothee Chalamet, Saltburn has heartthrob Jacob Elordi. Bones and All started out a nice chunk ahead in wide release (albeit that was in over 2,700 theaters), but by Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend the gap had closed big time. Saltburn will definitely pass that film's total. It's already a bit ahead of where that was after its third weekend.

Wow what a disaster to announce that before the holidays.

That's crazy. I Thought you were joking for moment.

Yeah, it's performed pretty much as poorly as it could have done. But pulling a film from theaters after 4 weeks while it's still going to add several million dollars feels wrong. I'd have at lesst waited until after this upcoming weekend since it's a dead weekend and *maybe* it could have a decent hold. And they said globally too, so I guess it's done at $197m WW. Letting it go over $200m isnt an achievement here really, but still...

Will they put it on Disney+ and/or digital before Christmas, then? What's the point of leaving it in limbo if not? It's not earning money in any capacity starting today(?) or Thursday (?) when theaters change their films.

They have said globally but I can't expect there will be much domestic to track very soon.

This weekend overall though was solid at $94M 3day total which is higher than 2019 post Thanksgiving.

The year is at $8,242,075,621. We're ever so close to $9B and have 28 days of box office to get there but may be too much of a stretch. We need a $400M+ type mega breakout from Wonka (which is in the middle of the month) to get something like that but that may be too much to ask for. An $8.84B total would give us a 20% lift over 2023 annual box office though and continue the post Covid recovery. With the barren 2024 from the strike we'd be lucky to at least get to $9.5B+ for next year.

lololol what

Has a studio ever done that before in the middle of a movie's run?

This smells to me like they were juicing its numbers a bit by taking $ from other Disney movies out now, but at this point they can't be bothered because there's no point in trying to save face. Another 70% drop to three digit PTAs could just mean another round of mean articles, so they're just pulling the plug. Poor Brie Larson.

I posted it in Marvels thread. Variety reported it and its specific to overseas where it did like 3m this week and so they will stop reporting updates every week. it does not mean they are pulling it off from theaters. Some time down the line I expect the overseas gross to be updated and I expect certain markets will report BO as long as its top 20 or something.
