Post The Color Purple
Trailer just came out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPwzBUui1GA

Doesn't look bad actually. Having the star of the Little Mermaid will have lots of people seeing the trailer. It's also already trending with millions of views so seems like there's a fair bit of interest.

How will it do? Feel like it could be Spielberg's biggest film he's been involved with in quite some time.

Feels like a mainstream play that's 70s on RT. I think it could break 100.

I wish she Michael B Jordan'd it and put an initial, when it's flashing fast like that it looks like it says Halle Berry.

So this is based on the Broadway play and not the movie. Looks good :D

I'd argue it generally isn't. It never gets brought up in conversations or articles on the best films of such and such a time or in such and such a genre. It is an entirely dead and forgotten like other Spielberg films Always, Amistad, and 1941.

The Color Purple is a film that certain people wish were a classic, but just isn't.

But this new one is coming out in the right era to make some money.

The musical was about as popular as In the Heights, so if it wants to make more than 26m domestic, it will have to have appeal to non fans.

I don't see it making more than say $70-$80m.

I’m not sure how this will do, but this is a pretty dumb statement lol First off, In the Heights is MUCH more popular than The Color Purple musical. You also just cannot compare the box office performances because of Covid and the day and date streaming that Heights had.

I just meant neither one is that popular outside of die hard musical fans

Doesn’t seem like it since Color Purple ran for 900 performances compared to In the Heights 1100, and had a successful revival, which in the Heights has not had

Neither the revival or the original production recouped on Broadway, In the Heights is more financially successful is all I’m saying.

Wow that new trailer is really great. WB is doing a great job marketing so far' The original made 100 million in 1986 and The Broadway play was a hit. Henson is going to kill nit as shug.

The marketing is very good so far. The trailer is effective.

$100M+ would certainly be a huge win. Christmas, New Years and MLK weekend will give it a very lucrative 3 week run.

Early reactions are fantastic and this is out pacing Wish, Napoleon, Wonka and Aquaman ticket sales according to BOT tracking thread. Guess we should not be surprised. The original is a classic that made over 100 million domestic alone in 1986 and was nominated for 11 Oscar's.

FYI just 1 good of presales for christmas day. Otherwise there is too much read into these things. I dont think Color Purple is going to outopen all the movies you mentioned based on the data we have.

The Color Purple has 88 on RT with 7.4 avg. It's on track to make 150 million plus with great WOM. The original is a classic so the success of this new one should not come as a surprise to anyone.

It will really need to recover over the weekend to even hit 100m.

Could there have been some Sound of Freedom-ing for its opening days by black churches or something

The original isn't a classic so the initial push that lost steam on Day 2 shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

The color purple is a classic. 11 academy award nominations, a huge hit for the genre, and the debates over the film have certainly lived on. but at the time it got a lot of negative press for Spielberg watering it down too much to his style. Reminds me of something like Driving miss daisy or even Philadelphia. it’s not necessarily a conversation starting film anymore, but if it’s brought up people know it and have an opinion about it.

From Luiz On X:
Quote:
Following exhibitors losing temper with #TheColorPurple at US #BoxOffice taking over 2.000 theatres away this past weekend,WB just announced that the musical is hitting digital purchase TOMORROW already, just 23 days after hitting theatres.

What a disaster. There goes any type of awards run. It's at $58.5M so could perhaps finish with $60M if theaters decide to drop it even more to get back at WB for releasing it for digital purchase already.

It was #1 with the 2nd biggest Christmas Day of all time and dropped to #12 3day this past weekend, not even making it two full weekends in the top 10 (it did make it for the 4day tally though). Regardless, it's one of the fastest holiday runs of all time.
