New trailer looks a bit too similar to Zootopia.

This should move to August Haunted Mansion’s old slot rather than competing with Spider Verse and Indiana Jones. In its current spot, I don’t see it doing much more than Encanto did.

Encanto was in different era when it moved to D+ in 30 days. Hopefully now the movies have longer 3 months run and that is communicated very well.

I agree it would benefit from moving away from the uber busy June for sure.

Opening against Flash seems like a mistake...

But if this is at least good hopefully it can at least do $100m+.

Really should take Haunted Mansion’s slot in august, or move haunted mansion and put this in July.

Random observation on the Disney front, aside from 2020 (where most movies couldn't be released traditionally), Disney has had at least 2 of the top 4 movies of the year from 2013 - 2022. Impressive 9 year streak.

Mario seems like a given to win the year at this stage unless something pops out of the blue.

With GOTG3, Mermaid, Elemental, IJ5, The Marvels and Wish as the top possible contenders, does Disney have a lock again on 2 of those spots (#2, #3 or #4)?

It's looking good on paper but think Spiderverse could get one of those. Feels like they'll be able to do it again and hope one of their animated movies outperforms their superhero movies so that business unit gets more attention.

I could see Mission Impossible and Spiderverse.

I hope it makes Inside Out numbers but Disney and Pixar are fucked up since they let Lasseter go for stupid hugs

I don’t think it’ll be that high but family animation should definitely start seeing a major upswing again

Post subject:  Re: Elemental Predictions

I was curious how animation's share of the box office has been recovering pre and post pandemic so put a "rough" estimate together of how the genre has done to recover market share.

Notes:

-I only included $20M+ movies (in the interest of time) so all %'s are slight underestimations.
-I included Space Jam 2 for the 2021 tally since a big chunk is animated.
-"Calendar year box office gross" was used. So Puss would contribute more to 2023.

Animated Movie % Share of Annual Domestic Box Office

-2023 21.32%+ (so far this year of box office up to April 19th)
-2022 13.06%+
-2021 11.86%+
-2020 8.45%+
-2019 17.87%+

Observations

-The box office seems to have been experiencing annual "themes" each year post 2020 that apply to different demographic audiences as a sign of recovery.
-We could return to 2019's animation dominance in the top ranks this year between Mario, Spiderverse and another dark horse animated movie overperforming like Elemental, Wish, etc.

2019 - 3/4 of the top films of the year (calendar gross) are animated (TLK, Frozen 2 and TS4)
2020 - Pandemic box office downturn. Onward top animated movie (#11)
2021 - Return of young people (led by superheros). Encanto top animated (#15)
2022 - Return of older audiences (TGM led). Minions 2 at #6. LY at #15.
2023 - Return of families to the box office (Supermario led)

Big takeaway

-Animation is back! 3 years with only 2 animated movies making $120M+ (Puss / Minions 2). We could see at least 2 animated movies OPEN to $120M+ this year.

Presales have started today and initial screen allocations are anemic. It has one matinee dolby show. Obviously all the rest of Imax/PLF will go to the Flash. Overall show count is anemic. I am not feeling it at all. Thinking 30m OW and then depend on legs to go over 100m which it should hopefully do.

It should at least move to the 22nd, if not august

I think that ship has sailed. They have spent marketing dollars and now even started ticket sales. At this point Pixar/Disney Animation will be in tough situation until a big sequel opens. not sure that will be Inside Out 2 or if we have to wait for Zootopia 2.

It's still so silly how Hollywood decided to schedule only one animated movie for the entire first five months of this year and then release three in the span of five weeks. I get that summer weekdays are attractive, but come on. They should have released this or the Kraken movie at the end of February/early March, in between PIB2 and Mario and take advantage of spring breaks in March. Now, both movies are gonna suffer from Spider-Verse eating up all the family hype. Hopefully it's more of a crowd-pleaser than Lightyear at least and it can leg out into July.

I don't see Across as being the family film of the summer. I'm skeptical it even increases much from the first, but if it does it won't be down to families like, say, Mario has been. Animation doesn't automatically equals family fun. Across is more for teenagers and young adults.

I think this is a disappointment for sure if it can’t even gross 150m total.

Post subject:  Re: Elemental Predictions

There are a few problems I see without even looking into it. It just looks generic. If Inside Out and Zootopia had a baby. It also doesn't help that Pixar is at an all-time low in terms of brand value. When movies go to streaming it really doesn't help their overall brand.

I've no idea what Elemental will gross, but it's going to be a darn sight less than it could have a decade ago.

Another earth/wind/fire/water type story? What happened to Pixar's brilliant and original concepts...

The concept and animation looks great but every time the characters talk it sounds lame.

Premiere is the 27th. If it’s good, it can hopefully build a little buzz before it opens

Pixar used to do well with presales as they had adult appeal. Now they seem to have lost all that. Worst presales start I have tracked. I dont know why they started so early. Plus this is opening 2 weeks after Spider-verse. I am not convinced even good reviews will help.

The concept is so generic and it has a horrible release date with Spider-Verse on its heels which will be massive. I'm sensing sub $30M OW.

More mismanagement from Disney. The Pixar brand is now on it's last legs.

At least push this film back to July 7th to give it a fighting chance. Spidey/Flash/Transformers/Mermaid in the weeks prior to it's release will absolutely kill it.

Unless they're not revealing the main plot, or if there's a big twist, this appears to be a very tired premise. It can still be a great film, of course, its just hard to get excited for and is probably unappealing to many. It almost feels like more of a shorts idea than Disney/Pixar's next big film.

Gonna predict less than Lightyear.
