I feel like I've never seen this woman before in any Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer. They have been squarely focusing on Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren, even though I vaguely remember them saying he'd angered three female gods, the trailers never show this one. She's the hottest one!

Tracking is bad abs competition is strong though would have thought it could still open to $50m.

Low buzz on this for sure. A low 40s opening seems still likely though. Fantastic Beasts 3 still got 40m with no buzz

WB's lack of money for marketing is truly sad. Channing Tatum made Dog and Lost City pandemic hits and yet they couldn't have properly released Magic Mike. So funny to see how much the day and date strategy fucked them.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't do well. I'm gonna go with like a $37m opening but it'd be nice to see it do close to the original.

It’s gonna tank.

Read today that Levi mocked Britney Spear’s conservationship and fans got furious, such a stupid move just a few weeks for its release

turns out this was optimistic!

I'll try 25/60 hoping this atleast has ok walkups with some more family appeal but it might just be a 20/50 at this point, or less if film is really bad

Why would this potentially gross less than half of Black Adam? It’s a sequel to a well received original.

James Gunn killing the Snyderverse made this movie dead on arrival. Thus why The Flash has had all its marketing focus on Keaton instead of Batfleck.

It appears audience do not care much for shazam. WB is dumping this. Not much of a promotion. Keeping reviews until late wednesday is terrible decision. So no buzz and so presales are non existent. Way lower pace than Suicide Squad or Birds of Prey.

Even overseas situation is looking terrible. Its looking like sub 200m WW grosser. They would have been better off making it a direct HBO release instead of what they are doing. :disgust:

Is WB dumping it on purpose... Or is it just the latest casualty in the awful decisions WBD has made since the merger that just keeps getting worse and worse. Did they not have the funds to market it properly, for example. They somehow failed to even give Magic Mike 3 a proper release on its holiday OW...

And changing "HBO Max" to "Max" is really dumb. All that time to think of a new name, as if one was even needed, and they just axe HBO?

It's definitely baffling that the film is tracking this poorly but that's really what this is looking at, crazy as that sounds

Sounds like we have a Magic Mike type situation again which had a weird pre-release strategy. It sounded like in that case they were trying to minimize marketing spend.

Still, WB spent at least $6M on a Superbowl ad here. It would be very sad if the OW of this doesn't even manage to recoup the Superbowl 30 second ad cost from theatrical revenue back to WB. :funny:

I also think we should be weary in our predictions for all WB movies this year until the fall when they have a lot more so might have their act together by then. WB may botch these upcoming films too:

April: Evil Dead Rise
June: The Flash
July: Barbie
Aug.: The Meg
Sep.: The Nun 2

Apparently the budget was $100m. Good for them for not ballooning the budget but if this makes less than $300m WW welp

The superhero genre feels like it's tiring. Captain Marvel and Aquaman are going to disappoint to really hammer home the point later in the year. I wouldn't want to be DC with this whole new James Gunn plan that hasn't even started yet. They're 10 years too late getting their act together. What it's time for next is post-modern superhero film takes where the characters have shakier morality and are reckoning with some of the unintended consequences of what they did. It would have been a perfect time for Watchmen if it hadn't already been tapped into multiple times. I guess these days though they can just mark the darker superhero takes on TV as seen by the Boys.

DC actually already had their act together if they had the trust and belief to continue with Snyder. They remind me of a football club that's constantly changing managers and expecting instant success. It rarely comes, and so the manager conveyor belt continues. DC just needed to put all their eggs in a basket. Any basket. And Snyder's wasn't a bad one to opt for.

It's weird if you look at the last 40 years. DC made highly popular superhero films outside of the modern superhero bubble, but couldn't really do shit when the bubble came along and gave them the chance to print money. The more I think about it the more I believe it was never actually a superhero bubble, it was just an MCU bubble. It makes DC's failures more tolerable that way.

65m WW opening. Really terrible. May not even get to $180m WW.

WW1984 did $166m WW deep into the pandemic lol

The bottom dropped out. Good thing they’re already rebooting. I would wait a bit longer than 2025 though. Might be too soon. The stink will still be there.

Did this fail because of the (a) reboot causing fans to avoid or not go in retaliation or (b) because there really wasn't much love for the first or (c) superhero fatigue or (d) poor support/marketing from WB who released it in a competitive space?

I'd say its a bit of all four to varying degrees. If it is the first, then Flash and Aquaman are a concern.
