I think with Memorial day the gross may be more spread out so I'm gonna say no for now. Rooting for it to though!

This is way too high. Saw the teaser at Imax when I went to see Avatar and stark difference in quality between Avatar and this was crystal clear. I dont see this one opening anywhere in that area in this post covid world where family movies have not broken out that huge. only exception is Minions and that had was an unique phenomenon that it attracted teens and even older boys for some weird reason.

Even Minions did not break out compared to previous movie. it just surprised us in not dropping.

I think there are quite a few reasons, but I think it can still do 200-300 total though.

If the box office had continue on as is after 2019 this would have been for sure. Now? I dunno. I think it has as good of a chance to be #1 for the year as anything else though.

Does Disney push a political agenda onto kids or do kids push a political agenda onto Disney? No matter what else you believe, just remember that Disney is a major American corporation who cares about money more than any progressivism. There is an algorythm out there that says that this kind of stuff will increase the box office not only of this movie, but future ones as well. Having a black little mermaid will bring in audiences that wouldn't have otherwise shown up. It will also ensure that the movie gets a fresh rating. And since the original has been argued as being a trans-metaphor to begin with, I can't imagine that anyone who is upset about the race swap would have been too interested in seeing it anyway.

What hurts far more is that these remakes are usually dull. When you remake something like say, Godzilla v Kong, at least the audience feels like they're getting a new experience because of the updated special effects. With these Disney remakes, the original animated versions legitimately still look better on our televisions. Aladdin is the only one that felt kind of fresh and that was entirely because of Will Smith.

If they're going to race swap I respect them going all the way with the lead casting like this, more than the new Peter Pan & Wendy movie where Peter and Wendy are white but Tinkerbell is black, so yay progressiveness.

Peter Pan is Indian

I don’t really care about race swapping unless a characters look is super iconic, like Ariel being a ginger or Annabeth being a beach blond California girl. Peter Pan is just a normal looking white boy so making him Indian isn’t a big deal. But tinker bell is iconically a blond Marilyn Monroe type

Do you think they would have been more succesful without the gay and black characters? Lightyear was still their highest grossing animated movie since covid began.

Race swapping Mary Jane worked out pretty well for the Spider-Man movies even though people complained about that at first. "A black girl with one name? My childhood is ruined!!!"

Spider man worked mainly cuz Zendaya is so hot no one cared. :funny:

If Zendaya was Ariel, I bet the backlash would have been way less

And no I don’t think that would’ve helped those movies at the box office. But there’s zero evidence race swaps and LGBT romance has done anything to BOOST box office.

Delayed due to poor reactions to the visual effects.

This finished shooting summer 2021. Why the vfx are not long done I don’t know why.
