Marvel was given a present by DC and Shazam.

Regardless of how bad a movie does this year from them they can say "at least we weren't Shazam."

Previews are not bad. Think it will do better over the weekend as we've been starved for product post Mario and people are ready to see something new.

I still feel this is a weak opening, we just saw it coming.

Matching Quantumania is a little lame considering this is supposed to be the "final" film but given the lack of hype it's fine. The film is very good so hopefully it gets people over the weekend who were gonna skip it.

WOM is uber strong. Weird thing is friday presales are still little bit below Ant. But walkups during evening should be good. Saturday PS is stronger for sure. I am expecting excellent sunday drop in low 20s and then have much better run than any MCU movie in recent times. I think this can go for 300m domestic with 115m OW.

Yesterday, Super Mario cleared $1.52M at 4,204 theaters, -23% from Wednesday for a fourth week of $49.5M.

Its dropping harder than what I thought. Looking at low 20s at best.

And that includes the early screenings too. So about $12M less than Love and Thunder. Brutal, but hopefully the word of mouth will be good enough to get it to $300M anyways.

So how Long until Marvel goes into panic mode and starts canceling projects?

Will Marvel enter its Star Wars era (AKA D+ exclusives)?

Mmm yeah I doubt we'll ever get a year with no MCU films. If anything they need to limit their D+ content.

I'm not sure if this is representative of its weekend. Mario seems to be a weekend movie anyhow with strong matinees. Will see a big hit but lots of families still seeing it Sat and Sun during the day.

Ant-Man 3 and Guardians 3 opening to the same numbers is wild and should not have happened. Somewhere they dropped the ball with Guardians.

Its good that this was helmed by Gunn. I am not convinced by Marvels, Thunderbolt or Captain America without Evans. That will be the real test for the franchise.

Yeah, lol.

It is quite astonishing how you go from a relatively well-received $140 million to a pathetic $57 million. That's almost a 60% decrease!

Deadline is saying 47-48m OD including previews and 110m OW. That is really good. Could be tad high as well.

https://deadline.com/2023/05/box-office ... 235357869/

Rest

Quote:
2.) Super Mario Bros (Uni/Ill) 3,909 theaters, Fri $4.2M, 3-day $18.5M (-55%), Total $518M/Wk 5

3.) Evil Dead Rise (WB) 3,036 theaters, Fri $1.7M, 3-day $5.6M (-54%), Total $53.9M/Wk 3

4.) Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret (LG) 3,343 theaters, Fri $930k, 3-day $3.3M (-51%), Total $12.6M/Wk 2

5.) John Wick Chapter 4 (LG) 1,658 theaters, Fri $600K, 3-day $2.4M (-50%), Total $180M/Wk 7

Let us hope the numbers for holdovers go up.

That is hardly really good. Pretty much Ant Man 3 numbers. No spinning this.

I think he’s saying it’s a good multiplier from the presales, rather than good overall

if you had told me a day before presales that this was its previews/OD, I would have called it a epic disaster. Now its doing better relative to what I saw 2 days ago. WOM and marketing blitz this week have been effective.

I think 3 key things:

1. General Marvel downward trend/fatigue etc
2. Subpar marketing
3. Starlord character damaged after Infinity War

from RTH@BOT

Really rough drop for Mario. That will be almost 53% week on week drop. Its not going to avoid a 50% drop this weekend. Not sure if it can recover enough to go for 600m

GOTG3 I'd been going with 47m, so 46-47m look to be in right ballpark and Mario at 4.2

I am seeing also a number around Ant 3 - 46.5m. MTC I track it finished 2% below Ant 3 but its possible it slightly overperformed elsewhere. Saturday presales are stronger than Ant 3. I am thinking 110m OW.

I don’t see this hitting 300m. It would need a 2.7x multiple, better than the second film. Even with good WOM, don’t see how that happens.

Think the opening not meeting its potential and the film being pretty well regarded 300m is possible. I guess it depends on how it holds into June.

Crazy Evil Dead was originally gonna be a straight to streaming film and now it's gonna beat Shazam's domestic total...
