New classic bomb for Disney right here like Treasure Planet and John Carter.

Re: Strange World Previews
I watched John Carter a few weeks ago and it actually holds up really well. Netflix obviously can't release all their movies in theaters but there's like five per year that should be obvious. Glass Onion will be just as big when it drops on Netflix, maybe even bigger with the excellent wom its receiving so far.

Even though Strange World probably would've done bad regardless... Disney+ really in the long run seems like it'll cost Disney millions So many casual movie watchers can wait for blockbusters from the MCU or like next year's Little Mermaid to be free.

After Strange World (and maybe Wakanda Forever) launch around Christmas, I think Iger will announce that the theatrical window is expanding and that instead of "45 days" it will be different for every project.

Well if watching Hocus Pocus 2 immediately got someone to sign up and they stay on D+ for the next 20 years it's worth a lot more than one movie ticket. But it's hard to say how many people specifically would have been motivated by seeing those movies early vs would have signed up anyway in a few months. And Disney needs to look at bigger picture in terms of branding, releasing box office bombs make you look bad, while they don't get as much payoff to point to for Turning Red likely being a success.

Re: Strange World Previews
I'm sensing a lot of flops over the next few weeks with indie Oscar wannabes but do think aside from Avatar, Puss In Boots and I Wanna Dance With Somebody will have major breakouts. Too much goodwill from Shrek and people still love Whitney Houston and this seems like it's the first big bio of hers with a big push. Could see both do $150M+ total if they are quality.
Babylon feels like it's trying way too hard. I'm sure it will do decent due to holiday legs but I'm more excited about The Whale's expansion. Everyone loves a comeback story and Fraser + Aronofsky + Hong Chau and of course Sadie Sink will pull in a wide range of demos and think this could be one that has a solid box office run as well.

Weekend #'s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever $45,900,000 -31% $367,670,596 Strange World $11,900,000 $18,600,000 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery $9,200,000 ($13,218 PTA) $13,080,000 Devotion $6,000,000 $9,040,000 The Menu $5,200,000 -42% $18,670,443 Black Adam $3,350,000 -27% $162,972,609 The Fabelmans $2,220,000 +2,374% $3,429,766 Bones and All $2,206,000 $3,710,537 Ticket to Paradise $1,850,000 -42% $65,069,830 She Said $1,100,000 -50% $4,302,000 Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile $870,000 -54% $45,146,937 Smile $429,000 -63% $105,473,000 The Banshees of Inisherin $339,000 -54% $7,863,646 The Woman King $160,000 +6% $67,004,000 Strange World $11.9M feels much worse here than Treasure Planet, Atlantis and John Carter. This was Thanksgiving weekend and Lyle wasn't even over $1M since it's been out so long. Disney will get away from all the bad press since they were #1 with WF. Still it makes Lightyear's performance look like Titanic's. Treasure Planet had a bigger OW slightly but that opened 20 years ago! That's the 13th best 3rd weekend of all time. It's not BP level impressive but the stabilization this weekend is good. $22.4M from 4 openers and expanders (not including GO). $9.2M from Glass Onion in 696 theaters for the 3day. It would have won the weekend considering fairly few even knew about the 1 week run and it could have had a 6X theater count.

Re: Strange World Previews
That Strange World even got made is pretty bizarre after Treasure Planet and Atlantis. I like all of those movies though so cool that something like this made now but am curious about how Disney animation could get itself back on track.
That Glass Onion PTA... with a proper theatrical release this would've been big.

Re: Strange World Previews
If Netflix really wanted to build buzz for the Christmas release of GO and saw the error its ways in leaving so much money on the table, it would do a "1 week extension" in expanded theaters. WF could drop under $20M and it would win next weekend handily with what could be a $30M+ second weekend. Buzz from week 1 will have friends wanting to see it before someone ruins it for them.

Re: Strange World Previews
Fun fact: This Thanksgiving marks the first time in 28 years that a movie in its third week of release tops the charts...

Ironically they just released The Santa Clauses show on Disney+ while the first one happened to be the film that won Thanksgiving 1994. Also, how memorable were some of these movies in the top 20 in just one weekend? 1994 was PACKED. I'd rather they just re-release all of these films this year then the movies we had this weekend. The Santa Clause Interview with the Vampire Junior The Lion King Stargate Miracle on 34th Street Léon: The Professional Pulp Fiction Forrest Gump Clerks The Shawshank Redemption Heavenly Creatures

Re: Strange World Previews
With talks of Chapek shifting budgets, I do wonder it Strange World really got up to $180M or if it was just designed to be a sacrifice so that the Disney+ content could look more successful.

Re: Strange World Previews
For another embarrassing comparison, Strange World barely made more than The Croods 2 which opened Thanksgiving 2020 in the middle of year 1 of Covid! The Croods: A New Age $9,724,200 Granted, it was the only movie to make $1M that weekend since Universal was the only studio willing to drop a film wide at that time but with inflation and everything may still have had more admissions than Strange World.

Re: Strange World Previews
Smile finally eclipsed The Lost City. What a feat! The film opened $8 million below The Lost City and Bullet Train, but made more overall. It opened with $20m less than the The Secrets of Dumbledore and finished with $10 million more. It also under-opened but out-grossed The Black Phone, DC League of Super-Pets, The Bad Guys, Scream, Morbius, Jackass Forever, and Halloween Ends.

Yes, incredible performance by Smile. Perhaps second most impressive of the year.

Re: Strange World Previews
For a studio that is known for milking franchises for all they are worth my mind is boggled how Disney had the restraint to not release a Zootopia sequel by now. At the earliest if one showed up in 2024 would be 8 years since the last one which made $1,042,533,689 worldwide. I believe it's Disney's only $1B+ film to not get a sequel/re-imagined film.

Re: Strange World Previews
Justice League Thanksgiving 3day weekend $41,090,491 Justice League Monday after Thanksgiving $2,103,667 / $174,007,541 tally Total $229,024,295 (added $55.0M more or 24% of total)
Wakanda Forever Thanksgiving 3day weekend $45,583,904 Wakanda Forever Monday after Thanksgiving $2,208,258 / $369,679,710 tally Potential Total $458.43M if it has 24% left of its box office to go.
Justice League had a similar Monday daily. WF should be at about $397M or so by the end of this upcoming weekend. With a holiday bump and given that it's been holding better than Justice League, feel it should be good to get past Justice League but as a bad case scenario still looks good for $450M.
