Yeah, seems ok for Lyle since it's a kids movie. I bloody well hope so anyway, otherwise it's bombing hard.

66% on Rotten Tomatoes for Lyle. Should have a lengthy run with no competition till late Nov.

Poor Amsterdam. Looks like there will be crocodile tears for it this weekend. Just read it's budget is $80M.

Margot Robbie is overrated - her movies flop, she leans on crazy too much, and she was only hottest person in the world in Wolf of Wall Street and otherwise is just in the group with the other beautiful actresses, while not having as unique a look a famous babes like early 2000s Jolie, there is a reason there is so many lookalike Robbies like Samara Weaving and Emma Mackey.

Both openers are bombs. Disappointing. I thought Lyle could breakout.

I agree. I've been sensing this for a while. She isn't strikingly hot anymore like when she came onto the scene in The Wolf of Wall Street. I've been over her for a long while, but Hollywood still acts like she's Kidman or Jolie.

How can you tell so early? I'm still hopeful that we cannot read too much into a kids movies' Thursday night previews. Families aren't going to be heading out on a Thursday evening, are they? And isn't Lyle aiming for a leggy run rather than a breakout? After all, The Addams Family 2 previewed to $550k and opened to $17 million, leading to a $56m finish in a more pandemic-affected year.

But yeah, that preview number for Amsterdam does not bode well at all. Losing to Lyle on a Thursday night. Ouch.

Friday #'s Coming In

Smile $5,365,000 -34.8% :whaa:
Lyle $3.5
Amsterdam $2.6
Bros $0.67 -64%
TGM $0.225 -33%
Minions $0.12 -39%
Tar $64K ($16K average)

Smile is going to make $100M with a hold like that! May be able to pull 25% drop this weekend.

With a long weekend Lyle may be able to recover. Amsterdam flopped.

At least Smile’s hold will make up for the poor openers.

Lyle should still be able to leg it to a strong gross.

I wasn't going by the Thursday numbers but the early Friday ones from Deadline.

Anyway stupendous hold for Smile. After last weekend I figured this was going to make it to 100 Million.

So pleased for Smile. It was my draft replacement for Aquaman 2, so if it makes $100 million it will go some of the way to making up for that loss. I'm a little worried that Halloween Ends will hurt its drop next weekend, though, which could in turn hurt its $100m chances.

The Woman King $1,350,000 -24% $50,179,639
Don’t Worry, Darling $1,150,000 -50% $36,125,735
Barbarian $629,000 -23% $34,979,203

Great for The Woman King. Will probably get to $70M+ and a 3.5X+ multiplier. Any Oscar attention and could go higher.

Halloween Ends should be worried there's already a horror movie playing like gangbusters. Will eat into that audience a bit. Halloween Ends might mostly just play to the diehard Halloween fans and people who have already seen Smile. Even if Smile were to take a hit it will recover quickly. Halloween Ends WOM will likely be bad.

Maybe this will be like the first year Saw underperformed because it had big competition from Paranormal Activity. Pre-sales for Halloween Ends here and at many theaters are pretty bad.

Barbarian is having a great hold this weekend. Should crack 40 Million eventually which is impressive.

Sad but unfortunately to be expected for Bros not holding well. I saw it on Tuesday and loved it. It should hopefully find an audience on streaming, and I hope Billy Eichner gets more good, solid lead roles from this, he was really charismatic and a great leading man in it. It unfortunately was never going to do well, but I give Universal major props for backing a movie this unapologetically into gay culture and giving it a wide release

That's really terrific for Smile. Wow.

I think Billy Eicner's comments about Bros after OW certainly didn't help and now it probably won't have good legs when reception from people who have actually seen it is positive. Welp.

True. It's just that Halloween Ends has IP and brand awareness in its favour, plus being a new movie you'd expect people to rush towards it. But maybe you're right as well. The fact it's releasing on Peacock PLUS Smile being in release might really dent Ends prospects. There's a ton of horror available right now, whether it's Barbarian or Smile or Terrifier 2 or The Invitation, plus even more online like Hellraiser. I know it's October, but it's still early and most of those came out in September. I wonder if those will also play their part in hindering Halloween Ends when it comes out. Or maybe (hopefully) it'll pull through because of its legacy and being the final part of the trilogy. Anyway, I dread to think how Prey for the Devil will do later this month. I don't think a weekend Halloween bump can save it. It looks so generic. Whatever happens, Smile and Barbarian should definitely add theatres that weekend.

I wonder if Smile will out-gross the original Scream. If people are already talking about $100 million, what's another $3 million?

A 22% drop for Smile and 17.6 Million weekend. Holy crap. That would have been a good opening weekend. Maybe it will be like last weekend and go up again with actuals.

Smile's hold is phenomenal. Paramount seems to be sneaking out these leggy blockbusters this year down to a science. It needs a 3.85 multiplier from here on out to get to $100M. Even with Halloween ends, the fact that its October and will benefit from the Halloween holiday so it's inevitable this is getting to $100M and probably much higher. Paramount also announced this marketing plan so feel as though the dailies this week will be strong again (from BOG): MON: tix at TUE prices, TUE: usual discounts, WED: 11x17 collector's print, THU: limited edition NFT.

Lyle's 4day gross is $13.4M. Underwhelming but it has 7 weeks of family audiences so not fully a write off yet.

Looks like TGM slipped out of the top 10 and under $1M. 19 consecutive weeks is still incredible! It's PTA dropped 7.4% and will wrap up its run with $720M!

Amsterdam flopped but looked incredibly unappealing from the marketing. Feel like Hollywood has released a movie like this a dozen times the last decade.

The Woman King dropped just 22% so clearly is having great WOM. $70M+ total but likely could be much higher.

In positive news, Ticket To Paradise made $10.6M overseas in its 5th weekend (+12.8%). Now has a $60.6M tally. Bodes very well for its domestic run as audiences seem to be receiving it well. It's also light nostalgic rom com with A list stars.

Wow at Smile. You know you're in a great place when the second weekend would have been a good first weekend.

Openers are both flops. Would Hellraiser have been #1 if released theatrically or would it too have fallen below Smile?

Post subject:  Re: Previews

Ouch! Just read that Amsterdam made $3.5M overseas from THIRTY markets. It makes it's domestic tally look impressive in hindsight. $80M budget down the drain here.
