Re: $1b movies of 2023
Yeah I don't really see anything else hitting 1 billion this year.

Barbie is one of the most unexpected billions of all time to me. I am still in awe at how big this went. What a weekend.

Re: $1b movies of 2023
Only Frozen 1/2, BATB, Captain Marvel, and Alice were female star led movies but each of these were more so from Disney/MCU halo. Barbie would beat Wonder Woman ($823M), Gravity ($748M), and Twilight BD Pt. 1 ($712M). Also, Ryan Gosling's total box office gross ever across his 18 films worldwide according to the numbers is $1,127,908,776. So Barbie has a chance to outgross ALL OF THEM COMBINED! He's only ever starred in two $100M+ movies (Titans and La La Land) which Barbie could outgross OW. Props to Robbie, she had two big flops and really hadn't anchored a blockbuster movie before. But she told studios it would make $1B when she was pitching it even if she felt she might be overselling it. Sometimes when you believe something enough the universe can materialize it and in this case it looks like its happening. https://variety.com/2023/film/news/marg ... 235674343/

Re: $1b movies of 2023
After all the MCU misses... Barbie hitting 1b is pretty epic. It also looks like it's getting good reception in China of all places so maybe it can make more than pennies there in the long run.

Re: $1b movies of 2023
Margot Robbie was correct in that the 'Barbie doll' is so globally famous and iconic and synonymous with unattainable American beauty and superficiality that the right film had the potential to translate that brand into a massively appealing story.

Re: $1b movies of 2023
Did some rough data searching on Google Trends and here's what I found that may give us insights by country
Barbie - Top Interest By Country From Last 90 Days
1 Mexico 2 Brazil 3 Nicaragua 4 Honduras 5 Australia
Rest are Latam markets until #11 which was the US. New Zealand is #15. 16/20 of the top countries searching for Barbie are in Latam so they seem very excited about this movie which early box office seems to indicate. Ireland is #18. UK is #21. Canada #22. Seems like this could become a bigger phenomenon there then it even is domestically.
Oppenheimer - Top Interest By Country From Last 90 Days
1 Ireland - Home country of Cillian Murphy! 2 Australia 3 UK 4 Canada 5 US 6 Singapore 7 Norway 8 NZ 9 Chile 10 Hungary
So seems Oppenheimer will be massive in Europe, AU/NZ and domestic.

Re: $1b movies of 2023
I am surprised India is missing for Oppenheimer. Its having the biggest opening OW for any hollywood movie this year.

Re: $1b movies of 2023
Let me give the caveat that Google Trends isn't an exact science. I only use it when I have no real data to work with. Countries like "Venezuela" were above those in Europe so they might do some type of per capita readjustments or something!
India was ranked #15 for Oppenheimer the last 365 days and 90 days, #22 the last 30 days, #15 the last 7 days, and #4 the last day, so seems like it's maintained interest throughout the year but really shot to near the top in the world the last 24 hours.
Oppenheimer the last 7 days sees a lot more interest in the ME and South Asia and East Asia.
1 Singapore 2 Ireland 3 UAE 4 AU 5 Qatar

Barbie not even being on the poll and accomplishing this in weekend 3 is so incredible.

Further proof that you don't come to WoKJ for people gifted in predicting box office. We may be able to offer up factors to help explain a performance, but we can't predict shit.

Less than 3 weeks to a billion for Barbie is really ridiculous.

Not long now until Barbie is #1 for 2023.
Just $170m to go.
