I can see The Woman King benefit from pent up Wakanda Forever excitement where some people just cannot wait for their fix of black empowerment. An opening of $23 million would not surprise me.

See How They Run should try harder to ride the wave of excitement that the recent Glass Onion trailer has created. But so far it has been deathly quiet, so I expect a low opening of around $3-4 million.

Viola Davis has said The Woman King is her "magnum opus". She also believes that it will lead the global box office. It's a shame because I like Viola Davis, but living in the Hollywood bubble seems have made her delusional.

Reviews for The Woman King are pretty amazing. Might help it breakout. Many have said it's Viola's best performance.

I want to see it now, I didn’t care before.

I wanted to see it when the trailer came out but then read about the true story behind it and don't think I could feel good about supporting it. I'm honestly surprised there's not more backlash. I hope it does well for the sake of theaters though.

Perhaps in spoiler tags - but what did you read that turned you against it?

Why would there be backlash? Films like this are ironclad protected. They cannot be criticized, let alone have a backlash against them. No white person will dare say a bad word about it unless it's a poorly made film. If it's competently made, then it's a win, because they will never dare be critical about it on the grounds of race or history for fear of being cancelled themselves. Women won't criticise it as it's a female empowerment movie. Whether it's good or not doesn't matter. It serves a purpose. Same reasoning for black people.

OK yeah that sounds about right and certainly takes the shine off the film. Though Algren is right - at this point in time, the film is untouchable, and the inconvenient history will be buried.

I think Woman King will greatly benefit from presenting itself as Dora Milaje: The Movie, and the controversy won't catch up until awards season. $20M+

If Blonde opened this weekend, with an NC17, I think it could've gotten near 10? Assuming theaters would even carry it.

Pearl is apparently opening in 2,900+ theaters. That's pretty insane. If it cracks 2,900 that's more than X.

I'm thinking 3 Million for the weekend.

3-4 Million for See How They Run.

Sony is expecting a $12 million opening for The Woman King, while others expect up to $16 million. Geez, I sure hope it beats those expectations otherwise I'll be calling it a disappointment. On the low end, I have it at $17 million.

It's not even noteworthy. This is Hollywood, not the Discovery Channel. So many historical films are not accurate, and The Woman King is one of the least likely to matter that it's not accurate. It's a part of a history that nobody really cares about anyway. It's not like it's a World War II movie saying the Japs actually won.

The Woman King is going to be a leggy crowd pleaser. I think an opening in the high teens could get it to 80-90m total like WTCS.

Woman King is much lighter tonight at my theater than The Northman was. Hopefully sales pickup throughout the weekend.

I know the majority won't. It will just get brought up on Twitter during awards season when everything faces some backlash even if just a little. Most won't even know about it. But it matters enough to me to not want to watch a movie about despicable people we're supposed to root for. :P This will join Elvis as my second 2022 movie to root against this awards season.

Anyway it's doing awful everywhere I look tonight. But none of the openers are doing well. Will gain some steam over the weekend. Harriet opened to 11.7 Million and this won't go that low. Especially not with premium screens. That had great legs and got to 43 Million. This will hold up even better I'm sure.

Minions: The Rise of Gru and DC League of Super-Pets should register nice drops this weekend. There's nothing else for kids, and particularly since the other child-friendly options, Thor: Love and Thunder and the Spider-Man: No Way Home re-release, lost so many theatres - a combined 3,385. The purely-for-kids options managed to maintain screens, so I expect some lovely holds - hopefully teens or low 20s.
