More than 30,000 screens (up to 80 % of domestic screens) will have $3 tickets September 3rd - what will Saturday box office look like - will it explode, will it decrease or will there be a normal Saturday bumb?

Oh yeah this will be interesting. I have to imagine maybe grosses dip (so maybe an increase for TGM is not in the cards) if it would take 3x as many people showing up to net the same revenue?

It's going to be busy AF but they need to make sure they have films worth watching!

Put AVENGERS, NO WAY HOME, THE DARK KNIGHT, JURASSIC WORLD, THE FORCE AWAKENS up on the big screen once again!

I hope it's a big campaign and actually gets many more people out to the cinema. All those older people that just go once or twice a year, and they go because it's National Cinema Day, that'd be cool. And most likely they'll check out the biggest film of the year, the one with the nostalgia ... Top Gun: Maverick. So hopefully Paramount manages it well, puts it back into the right cinemas, and it absolutely blows up on its 15th weekend!

People love free/cheap shit. Every movie will have packed showings next Saturday. I doubt it'll make too big of a dent on the weekend box office, but theaters will be able to recoup a ton of money they'll be losing in this cold stretch of films.

This will be interesting to see but unfortunately there isn't much to see. Top Gun, Bullet Train and Superperts should be the biggest winners.

Sep/Oct have dismal release slates this year so may be worth doing again.

Surely that's why a "National Cinema Day where tickets are just $3" is happening in September, because a) it's low season and cinemas need the uptick, and b) no studio would be happy with a promising release coming out on a weekend where their normal gross will be reduced to almost nothing. This is about the cinemas being thrown a bone in a box office drought, so I actually don't expect to see much change from normal. The admissions increase will be cancelled out by the ticket price discount. But cinemas should benefit from popcorn sales.

Another factor why we probably won't see any difference is that it's happening on 30,000 screens in 3,000 theatres. From what I can find there are 11,874 theatres in the U.S., and more than 45,000 screens, so that's a hell of a lot not participating in the event, which I assume are the arthouse/single screen cinemas.

I read today that the promotion also includes popcorn and soda of any size for $3 each. So that means for $9 you can get admission to the film, popcorn, and a soda. How much would it normally cost for these items?

Depends on the market. By me it'd be about $25 for all of them. In a premium New York theater it'd be closer to $35.

Ah, ok. So quite a saving then, particularly if you're going as a family.

I expect it will really help older films fill theaters but hurt the business slightly of newer films that would've already had fuller theaters.

I expect Jaws will do way better in IMAX than it would've otherwise. Wouldn't shock me if shows of that sold out if its just $3

Why doesn't Warner Bros air these House of Dragon episodes in theaters, perhaps two episodes at a time to make it 2 hrs?

It's out of the box but so what. Do something different.

Enough people would go to cover prints & advertising costs and make a nice profit - but NOT in enough numbers to cannibalize the HBO Max business.

House of the Dragon, Rings of Power, She-Hulk, Rick & Morty... It's crazy how the televsion output for this weekend is so dense while theatrically we have nothing.

Would love that.

Though unfortunately it's WB and right now they'd not even consider it.

If that plays out on a national level, I think we could see a few movies staying flat or even increasing this weekend. Beast should be at that level where it's getting 5-15% capacity, so to be selling out maybe indicates that the uptick in admissions will outweigh the reduction in price. Go Beast!

I'm taking my mom to see Beast today. Our showing only has two other tickets sold so far. Top Gun has one of our super screens and those showings are all almost sold out. That's doing the best here. Spider-Man is doing well too but not as well. Hopefully showings just fill up more and more as word gets out throughout the day.

The weekend might be a photo finish between Maverick and Spidey.

It will be a travesty if Top Gun doesn't get to be #1 one more weekend :P .

They should quick convert it to 3D ;). Or do a Top Gun weekend where all tickets are $3.

Is this the first one? Hope the increased business makes it an annual event.

Great weekend to rerelease Spider-Man on, too. Paying full price for 11 minutes of new footage may seem unappealing to many (families, especially), but $3? Yeah, definitely.
