Everyone else got this before Nope right? Though it was weirdly placed, after the amc logos and even Nicole Kidman. Took me a minute to figure out it wasn't part of the movie. :funny: The countdown thing was cool though and it's a good way to sell the movie.

Yes I saw this is front of Nope. Considering how horrible Nope was this was the highlight of the movie! Nolan strikes again, can't wait till next summer!

I mean, this looks great, but I just cant see the mass appeal here.

I think it's more a $80-$120m movie rather than one of Nolan's bigger films with mainstream appeal.

Damn he went all in on his boy Cillian. He probably could have gone Dicaprio/Damon/Bale if he wanted. But I think this was right choice.

check out the imax trailer. That is phenomenal. This one is rather tame.

Agree, easily the stronger trailer and I'm surprised they didn't use it as the regular one since it had Damon and Einstein

"Near zero?"

I viewed the trailer on Universal Pictures' YouTube channel and on IMAX's YouTube channel, and I believe they're the same trailer. Anyway, it's a great trailer. I think it will be an incredible film, just not one that makes loads of money.

I meant the trailer which was released only for Imax screens with Avatar. That is not released online(I posted link above). That had incredible tension and dialogue between Damon/Murphy is lit. Plus RDJ also makes it a great finish. Online trailer released had no damon/RDJ and was just about Murphy's character.

No one knows who Oppenheimer is, they should've called this 'Destroyer of Worlds' and made it more obvious (yes, even more obvious, audiences are dumb) it's about the atomic bomb. And Cillian Murphy is not a star/appealing lead. There's a reason he's always been a supporting player.

I don't see this doing much more than $30-$35M OW.

"The Manhattan Project" would have worked as a title too. The Imax trailer creates more urgency but...everyone knows the world doesn't explode. So...

Murphy looks perfectly cast which will help with quality, but I think this movie would have benefited from a more buzz-worthy lead choice. Still thinking they shoulda cast Josh Hartnett as the lead ridden the wave of free press surrounding his return to major films.

I think it should at least out open Nope for the biggest non franchise opening post pandemic, if nothing in the first 6 months gets there first

A CHRISTOPHER NOLAN FILM

sells the movie. not the subject matter, not the actor. general audience knows by now that when it's his film...its a must see.

Even accounting for the pandemic, Tenet performed poorly, and it was partly because it was the first Nolan film to have no proper movie star lead performer. So I think other factors do matter.

back then most big markets like new york and california had all theaters closed. % of theaters opened were too tiny. Nolan should have waited another year to release it for sure. It still wouldn't have been a blockbuster. But would have done more for sure. Nolan wanted to be a savior and instead sacrificed his movie :-(

Tenet's $59M in the peak of the pandemic I think would have done $150M-175M in regular times.

$59M for the Croods probably would have been $200M as a regular Thanksgiving movie.

Wonder Woman 1984 despite bad reception I would think would hold at least 50% of its predecessor for a $200M gross in regular times so it's $46.8M.

Tenet still had interest due to Nolan but not enough for many to venture into a theater in the first 6 months of the pandemic (pre-vaccine). Some of the big blockbusters probably made 1/3 - 1/4 of what they would have made otherwise.

I thought it would be nice if Tenet somehow got a redo box office run. Do a double feature with his next movie in 2023 to help it's box office and see it on a big screen.

Wonder Woman would have opened to like 175m sans pandemic so it would have easily cleared 300m, if not 350m even with mixed to negative reception

WB's decisions during pandemic to sacrifice their biggest blockbusters were easily the worst ever by any studio. Disney mostly sacrificed just their animation destroying Pixar/Disney Animation brand value at box office.

Post Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
I have to give WB credit at least for 2020 - pre summer 2021. They were the studio trying really to find a model that works during a time of uncertainty. They took most of the losses that the other studios learned from and iterated on. They were a lifeline for theaters though they had massive losses.

Specifically mentioning tentpoles rather than some of the B grade movies other studios released. Tenet, Wonderwoman 1984, The Little Things, Tom and Jerry, Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat were all essentially sacrified as tentpoles that would have made much more being delayed. WB cleared the path for every other studio to feel comfortable again to launch a tentpole.

WB May 2021 and on though was a disaster. Their whole strategy of streaming/theatrical was horrible since they had already pre-committed to it. Should have called it off but kept to it.

If WB didn't sacrifice so much of its film slate though pretty sure most of those theaters may have gone bankrupt or we would have seen a shrinking of the theater landscape which would be very hard to undo.

Looks good but it is so small in scale.

+ good to see talented former A lister Josh Hartnett briefly front and center early on.

I’d never even heard of Josh Hartnett till Excel became obsessed with him

:funny:

Around 2001 Hollywood was pushing him as the next big thing but he never really caught on. Seems like he’s getting some of the limelight of late.

Yeah, and he was never an A-lister.

He's basically a good nostalgic choice for males of my generation. People that are fond of movies like The Faculty, Pearl Harbor, 30 Days of Night, Black Hawk Down, and Lucky Number Slevin. These people are probably the core audience for Oppenheimer, especially since it's Nolan directing it and not, say, Ron Howard or Terence Malick.

This is what I think too, they're trying to package it as a summer event but it feels more like Imitation Game.
