Hmm this was expected. In this atmosphere a depressing drama is not the right choice to release even if it's a musical. |

I'm sure many moviegoers are more interested in an escapism type of film, not one with an inspirational message and themes that can hit close to home. Not to say they shouldn't have released it now, as it would have had to open under similar conditions for at least the remainder of the year, but it was probably likely to fail wherever it opened in the near future. And the bad reviews certainly aren't helping convince anyone on the fence about it. |

The marketing needed more numbers to show it's a musical instead of just him singing at some point. |

This was a weird case of in marketing them showing "Evan Hansen" as little as possible despite the title of the film. |

Sorry my sense of irony in meaning didn't translate well. Scathing reviews and social media feedback: Platt is too old to play Evan Hansen in the movie. So to improve the film's potential with moviegoers in marketing, they probably needed to show less of Platt to reduce the impact that his age was having on playing a teenager. So oddly the smartest play to have saved this one was showing Evan Hansen as little as possible in marketing despite the fact the movie is named after him. |

This has been a career-ending debacle for Ben Platt. It actually made critical opinion on the original Broadway production become worse after people realized how fucked up the storyline is. Some things that can pass on stage don't work in the hyper realism of film. |
