Weekend Estimates
Dog - 15.135m
Great opening. Really thought this would do mid digits. The trailer was attached to nearly every movie I've gone to in the last 3 months though.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Not only that, Spidy did $7.2M in its 10th weekend and $8.8M estimated for the 4day. That's #13 on the all time list for 10th weekends.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Sing is down just 8.8%. Next family movie isn't till Sonic April 8th in SEVEN WEEKS which is crazy with Fantastic Beasts the following weekend.
One of these could have easily opened this weekend and cleaned up. Though the first Sonic was a novelty as the first movie in the franchise not having any other movies for families could help it have another big breakout.

Even if they're both IP movies, Holland headlining two of the top 3 movies in a single weekend is pretty incredible. The closest other example of that happening I can think of is Jessica Chastain having Ma and Zero Dark Thirty in the top 2 on MLK weekend 2013? Honestly, this is the most promising weekend of the last two years. Two new non-sequels opening the same day and wildly surpassing all expectations with opening weekends that would have been impressive even in 2019 - Tatum has his best opening as the lead since Jupiter Ascending (with 1/12 the budget) and Uncharted is the fourth best opening for a video game adaptation ever. With only The Batman as a major release over the next four weekends they will both probably hold pretty strongly as well.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Also, wowsa on this stat: Quote: Imax and premium large format screens, the favorite haunt of younger consumers, accounted for a huge 36 percent of all ticket revenue. Most promising stat for the 2022 box office is Dog's demographic breakdown: Quote: Dog was led by older female audiences (54% female, 73% over 25 and 37% 45 or older).
That audience was coming to theaters less so seems like audiences are ready to come back to theaters. Just need more films to bring them there. Budget was $15M and already at$18M.

I think Tatum plus a simple straight-forward trailer that confidently sells a funny and moving time at the movies. Every time I saw the trailer I would think "5-10 years ago this could have done over $20 million opening weekend" - and then it nearly did that anyway! The Lost City is a similar situation, a movie with a solid straight-forward trailer that would have made it an easy theatrical hit pre-streaming domination, but is now more of a question mark. Any opening over $20 million would be great for it, but I would love to see Bullock pull off one more $30+ million opening for an original movie.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Can they finally make 23 Jump Street now. Jonah Hill should learn from Mark Ruffalo/ScarJo that if you make mainstream movies sometimes it gives you juice for your smaller passion projects.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Other than A Journal For Jordan, Sony's on a roll.
Oct: Venom $213M Nov: GhostBusters: $130M Dec: Spidy $800M Jan: Uncharted $125M+
4 movies that will likely do $125M + in 5 months. With Morbius in April has a strong chance of another big hit.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Amazing and great for BO that something besides a SH movie is breaking out(though spidey playing the lead definitely was a big factor). I think Batman will breakout huge especially if the reviews will be as strong as rumors are stating.

Re: Weekend Estimates
This really is the male Tomb Raider. I guess adventure style video game movies are the only ones that really work.

Re: Weekend Estimates
The Fox films seem cursed. Death on the Nile didn't have a great opening, but there's no reason it should fall 50% on a holiday weekend, given its demo appeal. West Side Story was the same way. Not a great opening, but it was the terrible holds that really made it a flop.

Re: Weekend Estimates
The Spiderman movies were a collaboration between Sony/Columbia and Disney, which would be the exact combination needed for Uncharted 2 to have Cage's National Treasure character. Cage/Holland as having a Stark/Peter rapport, Cage vs Wahlberg. A mini Maguire/Garfield effect with the crossover. Do it.
