I think it can do decently if it is a good film since there are still fans of Harry Potter that will check it out. But if it sucks like the second it will open to like 45m and crumble

Well they haven’t made a good film yet, and the last already flopped, at this point I’d say Narnia 3 numbers would be the goal, if wb doesn’t do same day.

Fantastic Beasts 1 was good

Think this one will actually surprise. It's mindless fluff and think people will want something like this. Depp's issues were also front and center with the second film's release. A 4 year gap since any film associated with the HP universe may also be a good thing.

Funny thing, in Germany the 2nd one did 10 % better than the 1st one because of much lesser competition...

The second one also did close to the business of the first one (9/10% off), but it was certainly due to having Johnny Depp. He was the face of the marketing. The third one is probably going to see a substantial nose-dive in Japan without him.

I could be wrong, but the public opinion of Depp seems to have shifted tremendously in his favor after it was proven he was a victim himself (and especially since Amber Heard is still employed by Warner Bros.). I'll watch the third one. I've enjoyed the Fantastic Beasts films, and I really like Harry Potter. But knowing Depp was fired under questionable decision making leaves a bad taste in my mouth. (Might just wait to buy it versus seeing in theaters actually.)

I hope this is good, but at the same time I also wouldn’t mind if this series ended right here. Everyone would rather have a Harry Potter 9 (and not Cursed Child.) Have a story where the gang quickly get bored with being cops (like any dark wizards are gonna fuck with these 3 after everything they’ve done) and seek additional meaning in their post-war lives.

This could easily go sub $100m domestic.

I hope they wrapped up the story because I highly doubt any more will get made.

What a way to waste what should've been an easy hit franchise because no one was brave enough to tell Miss Rowling that she can't write screenplays for shit, and her bizarre obsession with trans issues that has made press about her toxic in the last few years.

I'm 98% sure we will get a new Harry Potter trilogy ala Star Wars Eps 7-9 with the three original leads in 20 years time. The fact that none of Daniel, Emma or Rupert are having major careers (yes, Emma was doing ok, but the roles are already drying up, she's not talented enough to compete against the likes of Saoirse Ronan) makes it more likely they will come back. I think they really had to twist Harrison Ford's arm and he insisted on being killed off in the first movie, whereas Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were basking in the attention they hadn't received in 30 years.

I think it's more like 10 from now (20 from Deathly Hallows Part 2)

This will be interesting to track. I think this will do well if the market is back to "normal" opening standards because its the right fluff in these times and the series does really well in EU markets which are going to explode soon with Bond (another series that does well in EU markets). I do think that domestically this will go down to $100m-$120m total.

I forgot how terrible the 2nd one's legs were (I guess the decent OS numbers shadowed it.) Couldn't hit 160 million off of a 62 million opening. That's pretty prestigious company along with Hulk, Fast and furious 4, Halloween H40, and X-Men Apocalypse. I'm also surprised it came out only in 2018. It seems so forgotten already.

OS is the only thing this has going but I think maybe the pandemic will help it save face kind of like F9.

This is highly likely, but I think it's a mistake to not take advantage of the fact that the actors still look the same and pick it back up right where they left off.

I've seen all these films in the theater and this will be no different. The Dumbledore storyline should get a lot of Potter fans to come out and see it. It would have to be really good though to top 500M WW. I'm not sure if removing Depp helps or hurts. Probably overall hurts it due to his international draw.

Wasn't Dumbledore the center of second films marketing as well? He is a great character to explore but the movies have done nothing to explore his past, it's mostly the other stuffs that are loosely tied into Dumbledore's story similar to the original movies.

This I think could do okay if the trailer is good and the reviews are good.

Trailer out Monday. Brand is still strong.

Think all the buzz around the 20 year anniversary of HP movies as well as the January TV special could help Fantastic Beasts. I am sure there will be lots of promos for it then.

That should help it a day or two IMO the fanbase is very rabid anyways.

Even a small drop would be solid. Doesn’t have to do better, just has to drop not that much.

Trailer looks like more of the same unfortunately. Maybe it won't drop too much but doesn't seem like they've been able to reinvigorate any life into the franchise from the trailer.

Was the actress who plays Tina (Katherine something) recast as well? I know she's credited in the film, but why leave her out entirely from the trailer? I *guess* she could just see Newt off as he leaves New York, but largely excluding her character from this movie feels really weird if that's the case.

Been watching the Hogwarts: Tournament of Houses on TBS every week and really enjoying it, by the way. Didn't want to create a thread for it in TV since it's just a 4 episode special.
