Blame HBO Max all you want, this is our first real flop of the post-Quarantine era. The legs would have been better in the before times, but this multiplier shows that the demand was never high enough.

PR2 barely reached $10m is hilarious, TC3's second weekend almost beat it. ITH should have done better but hopefully it brought enough new subscribers for HBO MAX.

Great number for AQP2.

Wtf. I'm surprised Peter Rabbit didn't do better.

In the Heights # is very weak sadly.

Even with all that it's nice seeing 5 films over 6m.

The story continues. Disney's over produced, recycled garbage keeps making money whereas WB's critically acclaimed movies take a hit.

I think genres like action and horror are a better fit than ITH and Peter Rabbit. F9 will still do well.

I would’ve thought that musical fans would have turned out for ITH opening weekend, but used HBO Max for rewatches rather than going back to the theater over and over.

Movies aiming kids have been doing well for a very long time even during peak pandemic period so Peter Rabbit should have done better. ITH I can understand because musicals might be a better fit to watch with family at home as they don't bring that must see factor in theaters specially when the movie is out digitally.

Peter Rabbit 2 was a big hit (expected) here in March/April.

No worries :D In The Heights will stay in the top 10 ALL SUMMER LONG!

Looks to me like AQP2 and C3 were underestimated and PR2 overestimated...

Lol. PR2 number is helping make ITH look good. With that opening even if ITH stays in Top 10 for rest of the summer it won't make more than $55m-$60m, given the reviews and favourable release date it should have done more.

WB has hinted that ITH numbers on HBO Max were also soft.

That is surprising. Maybe we over-estimated the demand for the movie OR it could be that these type of movies open small and build good legs which it could not develop due to split release strategy. Now that its available on streaming we will never know the WoM build-up that we used to have with theatrical run, plus watching at home (vs theaters) might have had negative impact on the viewing experience of people who would have other loved and recommended this movie.

I was always surprised by the big predictions for it. I mean there isn't much to go on for it outside of The Greatest Showman and La La Land (Christmas films) but it didn't look any bigger than say a film like Get On Up Or Jersey Boys. And the marketing didn't really show big show stoppers or something different outside of the demographic (which let's also be honest got hit pretty bad by the pandemic in the states) I'd say it's more unfortunate than surprising.

I just thought the goodwill from last year’s Hamilton release (which Disney said was huge) would carry over to his next project.

In retrospect I can see why ITH didn't really stick. I'm not really sure what it's about, just its setting.

There were definitely signs but then again it's from Chu and a musical in these times could be a great idea specially when theaters are just opening. It gives you that pure escapism plus it carries themes and cast of minorities which is still very relevant. Though I guess Thegun's point also makes sense the target audience were heavily hit by the pandemic.

Also I’m sure WOM films that also get instant streaming will be hit harder. If you hear it’s good, why go to a theater when you can just rent it on a work night after the kids are asleep. I’m thinking of that surprise Beatles film Yesterday. No way that makes 153WW in theaters today. Theaters might very well be only for big films or genre films you want to see with crowds for a while (the numbers for them will be softer but they have the money behind them to get marketed for both.

ITH's flop reminds me of Almost Famous (the director of Jerry Maguire) which earned even better reviews (90 - Metacritic) than JM (77) and was expected to be the next big hit. Unfortunately, AF didn't live up to its predecessor, JM just like ITH not living up to CRA.
