Trailers out, this is going to rule the holidays. If it is good...maybe it beats Spider-man 10?

Erm... if West Side Story does above $250m I'll be shocked.

This will do well but I’m thinking on par with Les Mis or Into the Woods. Max is probably Greatest Showman numbers.

I agree with zwackerm. A musical at these times has potential specially in December with awards on its back but the expectations should be inline with BO of past musicals.

I think In The Heights will make more than West Side Story.

This is such a weird project for Spielberg but I would have thought so with Color Purple and I love that movie.

It will probably do well but can’t see a mammoth break out. Agree that In the Heights has greater potential.

The most recent trailer is... fine. It looks too similar to the original, IMO and makes it seem unecessary. I could see this disappoint especially for a Spielberg film

Not feeling this opens well but should have strong legs.

Could see a 15-20m OW and 100-120m total after legging out over the holidays.

This was probably a bad prediction.

Though I still think WSS will underwhelm.

2nd Half of 2022 boxoffice is very hard to discern with oscillating fears over variants. See Shang-Chi, Eternals
Venom 2, Bond, etc over- and underperformance. I do think we're on the other side of panic triggered fluctuations (unless a super lethal variant arises) so I'll go with a more optimistic projection and say $110-$120M for WSS.

Why haven't they released any music in trailers for a musical? I know they are trying to invoke nostalgia but getting new generation excited might be the right approach here. This will have a good total but I don't see it doing more than $100m at this point.

this will bomb. Nobody wants this. Spileberg is shit now (BFG? Ready Player One? War Horse?). even funnier to me than people predicting BO success are those predicting it to be in any way relevant at the Oscars after bombing and sucking.

I think at the very best this does $50m or so. Cant see much excitement for it.

I wasn't expecting much either, as buzz certainly seems muted, maybe $75m-ish if it delivers and the holidays treat it kindly.

However, Stephen Sondheim passed away today. A true titan of Broadway and musical theater. I don't know if his death will benefit the film, since I'd presume most interested in it already will turn out, but it could motivate anyone on the fence to come out and maybe draw in some casual Broadway/theater fans.

In a normal time, this is one of those leggy $125-150m hits. In todays world....?

It premiered in NYC and its getting raves. Spielberg's first and only musical with some claiming its better than the original.

This is so hard to predict but I feel like expectations box office wise are so, so low after a string of musical flops that this could surprise in a major way. This sort of feels like one of the hardest movies of the year to predict.

IT still feels like an unnecessary remake and like a streamer rather than something people will rush to the theater for, Spielberg or no Spielberg.

When the Wicked and Hamilton movies come out though, those will be huge.

It might benefit from being the first wide release in weeks though.

The only thing most critics seem to agree on not liking is Ansel. :funny:

Yeah, as long as they don't rush this out to video, I see it having a long run even if the opening is muted.

NYT has it winning Best Picture. I don't think it will happen but should be good for some Oscar nominations which will help it with staying power at the box office.

He's my #1 reason to watch it. :P I wouldn't be in a hurry to watch it solely based on the reviews if there wasn't someone in the cast I like. But him coupled with reviews I'm sure I'll go opening week.
