Super Mario Bros Movie: What Went Right?
I think it is time to drop this thread. This was a bigger hit than even the optimists like me expected.

Right movie right time. It's enjoyable enough, Super Mario is one of the most known video games ever. Young adults pushed the opening and families are what's causing it to have staying power.

No big animated movies in a while since Minions as most are recovering from the streaming switch, soft market in general, looked appealing, and it’s an IP just as popular today as it is, and of course nostalgia woth old and new generations to come together on.

Animated Mario movie was a goldmine that should've been done a long time ago. Disney's MCU and reboot shtick becoming tired leading a competitor for its demo looking fresher.

Re: Super Mario Bros Movie: What Went Right?
Going to paste what I wrote here ( viewtopic.php?f=12&t=89565&p=2306452&hilit=mario+video+game#p2306452). Quote: Super Mario is the best-selling video game franchise of all time. Add in multi-demographic appeal spanning generations back to the 80s, Illumination's track record (avg. gross is $261,723,961 across 12 films), global appeal of the brand, breathing room with an April release, and the fact that the live action Super Mario was so reviled that there's never been a true quality Super Mario movie, it's got all the ingredients for a mega breakout.
Quote: The fact that Mario has stayed relevant throughout the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s and is playing into the family crowds is giving me the feel this will be a zeitgeist type movie. Every generation post 1955 will have nostalgia attached to it which plays in its favor.

Nintendo deciding to finally make an animated movie and this time around the creators helped make it and not just leave it to the Hollywood studios.

Re: Super Mario Bros Movie: What Went Right?
Also still mind boggling that the studios would give Puss In Boots the entire family market for 16 weeks. That's almost 31% of the entire calendar year! A film people wanted to see with huge demand for a family film. I'm still happy to see that Puss will pull a 15X multiplier because of that but it made absolutely no sense!
